aleinxyu
hello all, i'm new to this board but i've been on several other forums that had to deal with my old car.. anywho i bought a 1997 monte carlo z34 i've always wanted a car with the 3.4 dohc motor and i finally got one.. now my first problem the idle on the car is a bit odd it seems to idle up when cold fairly normal then once it's warm it continues to idle around 1k or just above is this the normal idle? i'm going to replace the pcv valve and see if that helps today but i'm fairly new to this motor ( i've had a lumina with a 3.1 and a grand am with a 3.3 and my old car which was an 88 acura integra with a 1.6 dohc motor. ) so i know a bit about chevy v6 motors and auto repair in general but not a whole lot about this specific motor. also, are there any areas i should look, the motor doesn't seem to have any large leaks i see a bit comming down the front of the block but it's comming from the valve cover gasket i believe. it pulls strong and surprised me the tranny shifted smooth even at high rpm. i checked the timing belt and it seems to be in great shape looks fairly new. thanks in advance i hope to learn a lot from this forum as well as help when i can. slick
Yeah, your idle is a bit high. You say it kinda hangs a bit when you quick rev it? You sure your throttle isn't sticking any? What about your vacuum lines? Any leaks, breaks, cracked lines, etc? This will cause a bad idle as well.
aleinxyu
yeah i checked the vacuum lines i'll check the throttle and spray it down with some wd40. got the car in my hands this afternoon replaced the air filter pcv valve and changed the oil with 10-30 castrol synthetic the idle is down now to a tick under 1k in drive and right above 1k in neutral . tomorrow i'll change the fuel filter as well as regap the spark plugs. i think other than that i believe all is well. i do have one more sound comming from the drivers side front which i believe to be the strut worn out, it's a bit of a squeeking creeching sound when i go over a heavy bump. i've pushed on the car all around and the struts seem to be tight maybe it's just a loose bolt.. anywho i'll have a better look in the morning thanks for the ideas. by the way i'll post some pictures up tomorrow aswell after i wash her. digitaloutsider
If you're going to pull the spark plugs, just change them. Especially with the 96-97 intake.
aleinxyu
true i just realized that maybe not, a little too much work at the moment. i was looking earlier and thinking, wow those wires would be a bitch to change not realizing the intake goes right over top of the rear valve cover. digitaloutsider
It's not that hard, you just have to pull the mainfold. It's like 8 bolts or so. I can get mine off in 5 minutes.
aleinxyu
is there no gasket? and just out of curiousity how much pressure is in the power steering system, i need to flush it but i hate going and getting ripped off at a shop because i know how much work is involved for 80-90 bucks to have it flushed. digitaloutsider
There is a gasket, but assuming you don't rip it up, and you're careful, it's resuable. I've had mine off a handful of times with little problem. Why do you need to flush the PS system?
aleinxyu
the fluid is a deep brown and the smell isn't quite right to me.
aleinxyu
alright a few more questions, i know i'm being a bug but, my car seems to have a hard time figuring out when to downshit and is starting to have a hesitation problem. i was rolling to a stop at a stop light but the light turned green before i came to a complete stop so i put my foot on the accelerator and studdered real hard, it also doesn't seem to like to downshift, the fluid looks decent a little dark but not to bad and it doesn't have a bad burnt smell. also maybe i'm just paranoid but when the motors running at idle i hear a slight tap i assume thats normal and just the cam shafts turning but i just wanna make sure. and finally ( for right now ) what is the normal idle in gear around 900? my car won't idle any lower than that i used the idle relearn posted on this site with no change.
