steering issues

Hello all, I have an issue with my steering on my 2002 GP GT as of the last week or so. My fluid level checked out fine, so that shouldn't be an issue. It feels like I loose my power steering whenever I hit the brakes aggressivly and go to turn(like if you where to race between cones on a roadcoarse), when I put the car in reverse and backup quickly and then when I throw it back into drive. Most of the time I have this problem for a few seconds and then she will steer normal(as if the power steering needs to catch up), but when it does happen it takes alot of muscle to get her to turn. Has anyone had any issues like this with there Grand Prix in the past? Thanks!!!!

is ur serpentine belt slipping???

I don't hear any noise from under the hood...the serp belt is less than a year old, but I have thought of that as a cause....even thought I doubt it!

I may have a similar problem with my 2001 Impala. At idle or when your foot is off the throttle (engine not being revved), there is no power assist and like you said, it's pretty hard to steer. It's very annoying when trying to maneuver in a parking situation. Luckily, I haven't had to parallel park it. Also, it's not too nice when going into a trun with your foot off the throttle. You'll have a fair amount of muscle on the steering wheel then in the middle of the turn when you press the throttle, the assist comes in and you'll end up steering to much if you're not expecting it. Like your car, my fluid level is ok and the belt is not slipping. I have yet to pinpoint the problem, but it will get fixed soon. I was thinking it could possibly be the PS pump since it does whine a little and the steering rack does work correctly when the engine is not at idle. There was a recall on Grand Prix steering racks, but I think it was only for '97-'98 and their symptoms seemed to be different (loosing assist turning in one direction).

my bros 00 GP GT has really touchy steering at all rpm's.....it is really annoying...the assist doesn't give the road feed back like my car does.....if i got a new car, i'd take it off somehow.....but that is my opinion.

Does the 02' GP have any kind of like... computer aided traction control or .... performance driving settings? maybe that is affecting your steering? Other than that mechanically speaking.... doesn't it have a power steering pressure switch to raise idle to compensate for low speed/RPM turns? I'm pretty sure it does, and you should be able to monitor it with a scan tool to see if it kicks up idle in low RPM conditions. If it isn't working that would give you the problems you are describing... or your pump may just be weak....

Again I know nothing about the 02' GP steering system, so this may be a dumb question..... I know GM used electronically assisted steering in a lot of the early 00's cars, mostly saturns, is the GP electronically assisted? Like with a servo and junk?

I believe that it has computer aided traction control...I'm guessing that the power steering pump might be weak, but Idk. I'll have to give her a good test run tomorrow, because its getting annoying.

For the person who posted about his steering giving him trouble when his foot is off of the pedal....I'll give that a test as well, but so far I don't recall that problem.

  • 4 months later...

I finally got a new power steering pump installed. I lucked out and found a low-mileage one on eBay for $19. So far, the steering acts like it should now. I'm going to have to get use to it - it feels like "old man car" steering compared to before.
