Z34-5speed Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Well i was sitting in my car yesterday, i had the car running and the A/C on. I was parked. I probably had it running for 10minutes. The temp never got above halfway and as a precaution i had the hood up. So i shut it off after i was done basking in the a/c.(I work in parking lots all day with no shade). When i get ready to leave i crank the car and there is a whineing sound from 1000rpm-2250rpms. It has been doing this for 2 days now. The car seems to run a little rougher, dying every now and then. What the hell could be the problem now? I popped the hood and looked for the noise and i could tell it was coming from the front manifold/cam cover area. It is pretty loud and you can hear it inside the car. It makes this noise wheather or not the a/c is on. Any ideas? Kyle Quote
slick Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Alternator, PS pump froze up(unlikely) causing the belt not to turn as easy. I'm pretty certain it's not the AC. Quote
Z34-5speed Posted July 19, 2006 Author Report Posted July 19, 2006 Exactly what i was dreaming. That would be a good problem. How about a busted weld? Kyle Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 Does the noise change with engine RPM? Quote
89GP_SE Posted July 19, 2006 Report Posted July 19, 2006 That sound you hear is the beautiful sound of the bearings within the alternator saying "bye bye" Quote
Z34-5speed Posted July 20, 2006 Author Report Posted July 20, 2006 The noise goes away the higher you rev it. If it is from the alternator then why is it louder from the front of the motor? And why does the car run differant? Kyle Quote
Crazy K Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 take the serp belt off and see if any pulleys are hard to turn. maybe you have a bad WP bearing... Quote
GP1138 Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 take the serp belt off and see if any pulleys are hard to turn. maybe you have a bad WP bearing... I'd wait till the car cools down, and then take the belt off and run it for a few seconds. See if it still makes that noise. Quote
Z34-5speed Posted July 20, 2006 Author Report Posted July 20, 2006 Sorry, i can't do that. I'm not mechanically inclined enough to do it and, i dont have the tools or the time. If any1 asks what it is now i just say that it is my supercharger whine... I do have a leaky power steering pump, so i guess that could be part of the problem. If i do get the thing changed, could i have the timing messed with? Could i have the timing belt changed also while they have access? Kyle Quote
CdnCutty Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 The week my alternator started making the `whining noise`my car died in traffic and ran very slugish especially on acceleration..changed the alternator before it completey died..problem solved Quote
Baddflash Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Well if you're taking it to a shop you can get them to do whatever you want, it's your dime. Taking the belt of is easy and atleast you will know if it's the motor or an accessory. You can check the wp, ps, alt, a/c, and if you're still not sure pull the belt out and run it. If you do I would only run long enough to find out if the motor is good like 30-60 secs , remember there will be no water pump! Quote
1990lumina Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 taking the belt off takes all of 10 seconds....seriosuly i'm sure you can do it!! Quote
Psych0matt Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 yeah, not hard at all, definitely worth checking out first Quote
89GP_SE Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 taking the belt off takes all of 10 seconds....seriosuly i'm sure you can do it!! ahh yes its very very easy on a 3.1 but the DOCH is a little more tricky. Either way its still a pretty simple task. Quote
Crazy K Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 only thing need to remove the belt is a 3/8 drive rachet. there is a square hole molded into the indler pulley. insert the rachet head there. spin all the pulleys. I have seen alternators, water pumps, ac compressor, PS pumps, and even Idler pulleys whine and be hard to turn. ...as a matter of fact.... wiggle the idler pulley side to side. They can go bad and twist to the side while operating and rub on the side of the engine. Quote

Either way its still a pretty simple task. How is it any more difficult? You put a 3/8" open end wrench down there, loosen up the tensioner, and the belt comes off. Quote

Its a geo and it is pretty simple to work on. 2. I don't care if i mess anything up. 3. I'm just afraid to mess with this motor, i don't want to fuck anything up. I am mechanically inclined but i didn't think i was good enough to do this without messing the car up. Kyle Quote

Kyle Your not mechanically enclined to do something thats as easy as sticking a 3/8" open end wrench onto your idler pulley just to push it down enough to get the belt off? Quote
Z34-5speed Posted July 21, 2006 Author Report Posted July 21, 2006 Which one is the idler pully? How hard is it to put the belt back on? Kyle Quote
