Z34-5speed
I just ordered the chip today and was hoping some of you 3.4 owners could guide me through installing it. I know i have to remove the coolant overflow. When i remove it will anti-freeze spill everywhere or is there a way i can keep it from spilling. How difficult is it to install the new chip into the computer? Thanks for the help. I just want to get familiar with what i need to do before the chip actually gets here. Robby1870
Remove coolant overflow tank. Just take the line off the top of the resevoir, and loosen any bolts and take off any clips that hold the tank to the car. Then remove the tank. Just pull it straight up and out, making sure not to rotate it too much. Disconnect the negative battery cable. As for the chip, take the PROM cover off the ECM, remove factory chip, long blue thing, install new chip onto old chip, put back in the ECM. Ben's got pics on his website of the chip installation part. Do an idle relearn afterwards.
jeremy
what robby said, with the exception of the idle relearn...you don't have that step seeing that you have a 5spd

Z34-5speed
I have the cover off but i dont know how the new chip should look inside the computer. I cant find any pics on Ben's site either. Could some of yall give me some pics please!!! Kyle
slick
Umm... take off the passenger cross bar. It's like 3 bolts. Lift up on the coolant overflow tank and set aside. Pull away the fuse panel stuff, and there's your computer. You will see 2 bolts holding it in, take those out. Then, on the opposite side that all those wires go into it, there should be a sort of access port that has 4 little bolts. Remove those. Then, take out the factory chip. Z34-5speed
Ok, i got that. Thanks. Now i just need to know how to install the new chip into the computer. I have it mated with the old chip already i'm just not sure how they go back into the computer. Kyle
slick
It should only go in one way. Just look at the bottom of the chip and compare it to the pins in the computer.
Z34-5speed
They all look the same to me. Only differance is on the stock chip there is a little notch that only lets the correct side fit in it, on ben's chip there is no notch. I was just wondering if the new chip was supposed to go into the computer with the old chip hanging off the side. Kyle

turby
what robby said, with the exception of the idle relearn...you don't have that step seeing that you have a 5spd Actually there is an idle re-learn for manual cars. It's in my GM manual for an 89 GP.

Z34-5speed
I didnt do an idle relearn. It seems fine though. The car seems to be a little bit faster. I dont think it is the miracle that i needed to get me back to where the car should be running stock but it is a start. Kyle
Robby1870
My favorite features are the lower trigger temperatures to turn the fans on, and lean cruise. On a 300 mile trip home from college with my car LOADED down with all my stuff (there was "negative" wheel gap on the rear tires), I average 34.0 MPG. I was very impressed. This was after doing my fuel pump, thus, before I really didnt notice that much of a gain. Before, I would get about 30 MPG highway. Also, second gear's balls finally dropped. You can actually feel the car pull in 2nd gear. Not much, but just a tad.
Z34-5speed
My car's balls are second gear. There is a little bit in third but nothing in 4th or 1st. Kyle

Z34-5speed
Tell me about it. I am almost out of ideas!!! I had an entirely new ignition system put in, compression checked, new o2 sensor, chip, bla bla bla...etc. The only thing i think it might be is the timing, but the car seems to run fine around town. I did notice that it bogged down good when i was pulling out of a steep incline. Kyle
