I went and got a quote today from a local body shop to fix some rust on my car. I was wondering if it sounded reasonable.

Above my rear bumper it is flaking so he would sand it all down and paint it. Right under neath the gas cap area it is bubbling and you can see a rust color. He claims it is rusting from the inside out so he would cut the rust spot out and epoxy a plastic panel in and make it all even and spot paint it. And then he would paint the whole rear bumper. He quoted me $663.

The other shop quoted me $542 but thats without painting the rear bumper.

Any advice would be great!

I know our bodyshop charges our used car department approx $350 just to take off/minor fix/and paint a rear bumper.

I've heard of bodyshops charging approx $60/hr on bodywork.. so add in supplies and it adds up.

I'm not sure if that's a good deal, but $663 sound better having a bumper painted, that's for sure.

To graft in a plastic panel where it's going to meet metal might mean trouble down the road. Metal ideally should be replaced with metal. If your/he's going to use a body filler... either give it a week or two to cure, or it might shrink under the paint some if he does it all at once. When that happens... it's called "Picturing".

Reguarding the pricing... I would say that's about average.

If you have rust on the body... do yourself a favor and buy some POR-15.... then look under your car.

Also don't wash your fresh paint for a couple of days. Don't wax or use a buffer for at least a month (I learned that the hard way )
