HELP! Does my tranny have sensors that can break???

Hi, I still have my 1994 GTP and I'm having lots of trouble with it these days... I've just recently fixed the cat and 02sensor as well as cleaned the whole injection system, now it finally idles the way it should, even when it's hot. Then, a couple of days later, my alternator dies and I'm sitting on the highway at night. Great. After I got the car back from the mechanic (that charged me 540$ for it!!!)(I'M SO BROKE) I realized that it doesn't shift up from the first gear. Then it suddenly feels like going in neutral and then in 4th gear. Check engine light comes on. Tranny doesn't shift down anymore. So what I have to do now is putting the stick on 1 or 2 to start and later on in 3 and "D" to drive normally. This way everything works fine, which makes me believe that the tranny is fine (oil level perfect, oil red not burnt)(tune up recently done) WHAT COULD THAT BE??? I tried reading the codes, but the light doesn't flash at all. When I turn on the engine the Check engine light is out. Then the same thing happens again and the light remains on until I turn the engine off. WTF??? Does anybody know...?

your SES light doesn't flash at all, you said you have a '94, you probably have the wonderful OBD 1.5, in which case you'll have to have a shop check it. I've heard Autozone or something will do it for free. Good Luck

you didn't say wether or not the speedo worked? i'm willing to bet that they accidentially unpluged the VSS, or that it has gone bad. the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is located on the tailshift of the trans on the passengers side, i replaced one, cost me $70 at the dealer, however i have a spare good one if you want it PM me.

Get the car to AAMCO....when my tranny crapped out I had to pay $2800 for a practically new one...but at least now it's warrantied for a while. They're good people.

His Tranny shifts fine as long as he does it manually, so I highly doubt his tranny will crap out any time soon (Knock On Wood).

White93Z34, would a VSS cause it to shift weird like that? Not doubting just curious

You have the 4T60-E transmission which is controlled electronically. I'd start looking for things unplugged or worse busted off. Getting the codes checked will defintely help narrow things down.

If the VSS is malfunctioning the tranny won't know how fast the car is going, and therfore can't tell which gear to be in (I think anyway???)

Well, my tranny doesn't shift at all, unless I shift with the stick. The thing with the VSS is weird, when I first bought the car 2 years ago or so, the speedo quit working same as all the info on the hud. So I figured that the VSS is broke, I still have the 30000kms on the clock from when I bought it. The tachometer works fine. But I never had any transmission issues although the VSS seems to be broke. It all started after the highway here was jammed and I was stuck in stop and go traffic for an hour or so. First I felt the car is missing power (4th gear to start...) then the instrument cluster lights got darker and the engine died. So the mechanic fixed the alternator, now the ENGINE runs fine again, its the transmission, that doesn't shift. So I have to shift by hand, it doesn't even go into the kickdown. Will have the error code checked the next days and let you know, thanks for your help so far...

The signal from the VSS goes into the ECM first, which will then control the shifts of the trans. It will go from the computer to the cluster. If there is a problem with the signal going from the ECM to the cluster, than your speedo would die, but the car would still shift normally. If there is a problem with the signal going from the VSS to the ECM,(Broken wire, Broken sensor, Disconnected Sensor...) than that would definately cause the transmission to not shift properly. It MAY also trigger the SES light, because the output speed it detected as "out of tolerance" with the input speed of the transmission. This would cause a "Transmission Component slippage" Code. Im not too sure if OBD 1.5 can detect Slippage, but I know that OBD II does.

when i had some broken VSS wires it caused all sorts of problems, the car woulden't shift right, it would constantly start out in 3rd gear, i had about 50% power, miserable times.

in the meantime, make sure the connection is good, just pull your passenger side wheel and look for the little sensor back on the tailshaftmake sure that its pluged in good.
