1996 Cutlass Supreme, 92,000 miles, 3.1L. Run's great, however I'm getting some tranny shudder when in OD. I can feel it in the gas pedal. Changed the filter and fluid but still there. It's not major but there is definitely something there. I'm reading a lot on here about torque converter problems causing this. Could this be the case? Is this something that may possibly be covered under warranty? I've got the 100K mile warranty. I suppose the hard part would be convincing them there's actually something wrong! Thanks.

I have exactly the same problem! Be damned if I know what it is yet though. The guys in our trans dept. say that it could be a torque converter problem also. I am going to get our shop formen to road test the car with the tech 2 scanner and check the tranny data. Will definately let you know on this problem. My car is a 95 GP with 126,000 kilometers. I get the shudder in o/d at aprox 70-80- km/h, and I also get a pretty severe clunk when I shift into o/d at wide open throttle at about 140-150 km/h.

Thanks a lot. I would appreciate it. I just drove it home from work on the interstate and should also note that it shows up frequently when it stays in overdrive up long gradual hills, etc. I know these aren't the strongest transmissions in the world and that it's straining to pull the car up hills in OD. It does seem to improve if it kicks down to Drive, however.

Definately the same problem I have, always seems worse when the tranny is hot, and goes away when I down shift to 3rd. I will be doing a lot of highway driving this summer, so I have to figure this out, Maybe there is a performance orientated converter available.

Is your engine at lower RPM's when you notice it? Mine does something similar when it should really downshift but doesn't it shudders. Usually I give it more gas and it downshifts. My 90 Lumina has ove 250,000KM on 3.1L w/4SPD AUTO. Tranny was fine till I had it flushed at 200,000. Don't really care though as long as it lasts long enough to swap for 3.8SC and 4T65-E.

To check the elctronics and Torque Covertor diconnect the plug from tranny and test drive.

You hit it right on the head. That's exactly what it is doing. It's straining to stay in OD when it should be kicking down to drive, at which point the vibration stops. Could you be more specific on disconeecting the plug for the test drive? What comes next? Any advice? Thanks.

that plug is a five pin plug that can be accessed by taking off the airbox. It can easily be seen running to the front of the tranny. Unplug it, then drive it. You wont have overdrive or TC lockup. So, if it doesnt act up with the plug out, the problem is more than likely the TC. If the problem still persists, it maybe something else.
