94CutlassXtreme
Yea, so for no appearant reason, I got in my car and the voltimeter was reading a steady like 8-10v. It wouldnt budge no matter what I turned on. I punched it, and the car had a slight misfire under load. I tried turning up my music, and the box wouldnt pound. I drove the thing like this for about 30 minutes, so its not a bad alternator, unless the voltage regulator is fucked. This has happened before, but it usually kicks back up on its own. Theres also an odd groan while this is all going on. Alternate positve and batt cables are all good, any ideas?
Crazy K
sounds like an intermittant/failing alt to me. sorry dude!
1990lumina
at least it's a 3.1 variant easy to change out
94CutlassXtreme
Yea I was thinking that, its only a year old and I put in a new one, not a reman. It was fine this morning. If it was an intermittent failure, driving the car while it wasnt charging should've killed my battery in a least 20 minutes, and if anything, it shouldnt of started this morning. SigEpCutlass
Your alternator is probably just on it's way out. Do yourself a favor and change it before it leaves you SOL somewhere.
19Cutlass94
Well the alt on a 3100 is VERY easy to change to go down to the local autozone/napa and have them test it.

chevyguyss18
With the car running, make sure that not just the pully but the rotor inside the alternator is spinning at the speed of the motor. Also i've had it where the alternator brushes inside go bad, and it will give the car enough charge like in ur case to run for a half hour or whatever, to keep it running. What happens when you turn on the A/C? becuase thats a big draw, along with the rear window defroster? Make sure belts tight and check tensioner.
