Well, the starter on the TGP is pretty much toast, now. It had heat saturation issues prior to today, and then this morning, the only way I could get the car to start after the 2 minute trip to the parts store to pick up a CV axle was to hit it with a hammer while an employee turned the ignition. So while it's in getting the CV axle done, I was thinking of having them just throw on a new starter. However, I remember reading something about being able to use a starter off of newer GMs. Smaller, lighter, and high torque? If so, which ones can be used? And if someone who has successfully done this has a part number, it would be most appreciated!

i know it's a newer 3x00 starter, because that's what I have. From a thread of mine regarding my engine swap a while ago:

from what i understand you just sak for a starter for say a 2001 malibu with a 3100 or a 2001 impalla with a 3400. its nice to have since its smaller, lighter and higher torque. i know if/when mine dies i'm getting one of them

and on top of that, it was cheaper than a direct replacement, too

you want a gen III 3800 starter (obv. ie 04 gtp or so)

Is that confirmed?

GMFan, find my TSTE rebuild topic in the TGP section and skim the first page. I bought an '05 3400 starter for mine and we discussed it a little.

Yep, the newer style (I believe gen III) 3x00's(60* style) starters are much much smaller, and high torque.

So just to confirm I'm not getting the wrong thing, this would work?

eBay auction

And there's no issues what so ever with these new starters on our cars?

Nope, no issues with mounting the new ones, wiring the new ones, nothing. Take out the old, put in the new.
