Pabz Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Took apart the engine from the 91 grand prix 5-speed,turns out the oil pan had 2 holes in it and looked like someone beat it from the inside. It also had chunk taken out of the block and 2 bend rods. I took the heads off and found one shattered piston and one cracked one. What could have caused this? Could it have messed up the 5-speed? how can i check the 282 to be sure its good enough for a swap? Anybody wanna see pictures? Quote
Supreme Cutlass Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Maybe, someone got pissed (or just wanted to kill the car), drilled in the oil pan and drained the oil. Then the owner drove it, siezed the engine but had it in gear so it shattered the piston, etc. Whatever it was I want to see it. Quote
Crazy K Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 pics! I don't know if it would cause tranny damage... I suspect it would have locked the wheels up, of just had the clutch slip. ever seen a video of a accordianated bus in russia crashing in a tunnel because it suffered lock up of the middle (drive) wheels? Tranny out? try spinning the clutch plate in each gear and make sure the out put shaft turns freely. if it is bad, they do sell rebuild kits at least. Quote
1990lumina Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 My dad had the same thing happen to him last year with the 6.5TD in his Suburban. Piston cracked and exploded....put the rod through the oil pan...whole bottom end of the block was in the oil pan Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 Theres many things that acutally *could* cause it. Quote

Anybody wanna see pictures? without opening the trans up, you can check fluid level/color/smell, pull VSS and see how much metal shavings are stuck to it (magnet), make sure it goes into all gears, check input shaft play, check diff pin for wear, inspect case for cracks etc. Quote
