Ukgrandprix Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 We have just fitted a towbar to our 91 grand prix but she sits pretty low with the caravan hooked up,any advise on highering the old girl would be apreciated cheers lads Quote
White93z34 Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 whats a "caravan"? also how much gross weight is it? these cars are ment to tow 1000lbs at most. Quote
herb427sc Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 You might have to translate into "AMERICAN" English english is confusing. Are you pulling something with the Grand Prix?? OR Is the Grand Prix being towed behind another vehicle?? Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Come on guys: He installed a trailer hitch to his Grand Prix.. And now with a trailer (Caravan) installed, the end of it sits low.. And he needs advice on getting it to sit higher.. ..You will need to get some stiffer stuts, also a new monoleaf.. But let me get you a site that will do an even better job for your situation: http://www.fastfwdperformance.com/ This link will take you to Fast FOrward Performance (FFP).. CLick products, then click coil over struts.. THese struts are fully adjustable, and allow you to have a rear more suited to towing as your Grand Prix did not leave the factory equipped for towing.. Good luck! And welcome by the way; Nice to hear from our English bretheren once in a while! Quote
jeremy Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 We have just fitted a towbar to our 91 grand prix but she sits pretty low with the caravan hooked up,any advise on highering the old girl would be apreciated cheers lads I wouldn't recommend trying to tow a mini van with a '91 GP Quote
Ukgrandprix Posted June 24, 2006 Author Report Posted June 24, 2006 Thanks for that link,i apologise for the "English" English i couldnt remember the American term for caravan sorry about that Quote
Ukgrandprix Posted June 24, 2006 Author Report Posted June 24, 2006 Yeah Dodge caravan? sorry i ment trailer Quote
jdcutty Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Make sure your transmission is serviced and in good operating condition. Quote
97loudcut Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 i dont know how good GP's are for towing. i wouldnt risk it Quote
1990lumina Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 Slap a tranny cooler on it at least....she'll be making some extra heat while towing the tranny isn't going to like very much. Quote
Ukgrandprix Posted June 24, 2006 Author Report Posted June 24, 2006 So is the auto box the achilles heal with the grand prix then?,its not going to be towing all the time just to a few american car shows and done to cornwall (southwest of England) later in the year,we have checked the tranny oil and its fine Quote
ToroToro Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 I'm sure it'll be just fine. I towed an 16 foot fiberglass boat regularly and even a '66 olds 442 a few times with a 200K mile '88 Trofeo ( same trans )....only thing I added was an oil cooler. It was stressing with the 442, but we are talking close to 3500lbs with the trailer. The boat it handled just fine, and that was about 2000 I'd say. Laugh all you want, but when you absolutely HATE trucks, you tow with what ya got. I wouldn't worry about it. Quote
Ukgrandprix Posted June 24, 2006 Author Report Posted June 24, 2006 Yeah wouldnt mind a big dodge ram or something like that but there soooo expensive here but the trailers only about 1000lbs and im not fitting a tow hitch to my old 72 mustang so the trusty grand prix got one. we picked the trailer up and you hardly notice it on the back car pulls fine i was really impressed by it Quote
Crazy K Posted June 25, 2006 Report Posted June 25, 2006 trannys in our cars are usually very strong, the situation is that towing something may be overloading on the transmission, which could make it overheat and damage it. a transmission cooler may be difficult to obtain in a country were almost all vehicles have manual transmissions. info from some articles: http://www.dieselpage.com/art0898hy.htm http://www.perma-cool.com/faq/coolers.html good luck, You may have to by one on the internet and have it shipped to you. also You should try to balance the trailer better so the tongue load (the amount of wieght on the car's hitch) will be less.
