ToroToro
Okay...as some of you might know, I've been running my custom solid upper engine mounts for awhile now. Last week I decided to take them off and drill them for bushings ( the vibration wasn't bad, but they transmitted a lot of engine noise and I'm tired of it )... I dont know when I'll get over to the shop to finish them, but I got the factory ones back on, and now I get a clunk when ever the tranny goes into gear...IE: reverse, drive.... Also sometimes when I pull into driveways. So now I'm trying to figure out what the hell is wrong. I'm either suspecting the lower engine mount, or the trans mount. I also am going to check the sub frame bolts to see if they are the problem. The dog bones seem to be still good. Anyway, what do you guys suspect to most likely be the problem? I'll see what I can do about getting a vid up.
Brian P
If your lower mount is original, then yeah, probably went flat.
ToroToro
As far as I know it is. Car has 107K miles now so I spose that could be the problem.
19Cutlass94
Its the lower mount. I know the exact noise your talking about. When my subframe was replaced, I had them put in a solid rubber mount, noise has been gone ever since.

Because its better than the hydraulic one that comes from the factory.

Brian P
I know the solid aftermarket mounts hold up better than some of the hydraulic aftermarket mounts. I bought an Anchor brand hydraulic mount that went flat (leaked all the fluid) and one mounting stud pulled out in two weeks! And my friend for some odd reason bought the same one later on, and his went bad within a month. Though, right now I'm using a Napa hydro mount, so far so good after over half a year. GnatGoSplat
I guess I got lucky with mine. I put in a hydraulic mount back in the late 90's sometime... 96, 97, 98? Definitely before '99. I think it actually was a cheap Anchor brand. It was so cheap they even painted over the rubber. I remember it was made in India. So far, so good. The ol' 2.8 probably doesn't have enough torque to kill one. The OEM mount would probably still be good today if it weren't for power steering fluid having leaked all over it. That kills them pretty quick.
Brian P
I put the Anchor mount on my '90 Cutlass 3.1. The stud that keeps the mount on the bracket is what broke off, and I specifically remember using a torque wrench to get everything tightened to spec. I don't remember it being painted, but Anchor could have changed who makes it within that time period, I put it in around 2002.
19Cutlass94
Right now I just have the solid rubber replacement from NAPA. I put that in beacuse like mentioned above, I dont have to worry about fluid leaking. Although it may not absorb some of the vibrations from the engine like the hydro mount does, its been holding up great since it was put in and it still looks like new. Not to mention it was cheaper.
