mischief3003
So I took my car in last week for emissions testing and it passed everything except for Hydrocarbons. The legal limit was like .8 and my car was 4.8 i believe. What are Hydrocarbons and what causes this problem?
Supreme Cutlass
Unburnt fuel; Replace your plugs and check for leaky valves, valve guides, etc.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Were you running premium? If you were... don't. Make sure engine is HOT when you get it e-tested. Preferably go on a dry day.

19Cutlass94
Might want to check the EGR as well.
94CutlassXtreme
The EGR would cause high NOX emissions. Try running some drygas through it then going again.

R Dubya
ANY leak in an exhaust system will cause fluctuations in backpressure on the system, and it can cause a rich condition, especially if there are O2 sensors behind the catalytic converter. The exhaust system is not a one way street, the pulses cause air to be pulled in and well as pushed out, and may very well be partly to blame for the rich condition you are describing. DOHCRagtopguy
Try a bottle of CRC 'Guaranteed to Pass Emissions Test', run one bottle thru your system with at least 3/4 full tank, run tank almost completely out then refill with regular gas, drive about 10 miles on fresh tank, go take the test. If it doesn't pass, apply for the refund. Stuff works great, trust me.
