19Cutlass94
I think it would be easier from above.
1990lumina
Can't the tranny be taken out from below and the engine left in the car?? Or are you doing engnine work as well.... I'd say if the engine was staying, drop it out the bottom, but if you must take both out out the top is probably easier unless you have some type of hoist to left the car when you drop the subframe..... patgizz
the tranny can't come out the bottom without the cradle coming out, which about requires a cherrypicker anyway. i'd do it out the top, that way you dont have to worry about screwing your alignment up if you do not get the cradle back in exactly the same position as it was in. 5speedz34
OUt the bottom is the way I would go. I'm curious how did you support the engine in the bay?

Dunno what he did...but I know you can buy those engine support braces that go from one fender to the other, and it has a chain in the middle on a long bolt which you connect to the engnine to support it when disconnected from it's mounts.....it's pretty slick, I saw my friend's dad use one on my friend's Cavy when we replaced the clutch.... jdcutty
When i did mine, I held the engine up with a block, and a jack, undid the two subframe bolts and dropped it out. It went pretty smooth.

It went pretty smooth. if you have an auto you didn't have to worry about pulling the transmission away from the clutch enough to clear the input shaft. i don't really even see how it is possible to R&R a Getrag without dropping the cradle w/drivetrain or pulling the engine/trans out the top but then i've never tried it. putting it back in and aligning the clutch (all while making sure the TO bearing stays in place) isn't going to be much fun. kuntzie
well the tranny went in like butter, i also made a writeup on how it was done in the powertrain section here. goddamn thats one grippy clutch, nice big chirps into 3rd gear with a fast shift
