Rear drop leaf?

Heza

Recommended Posts

i read on this webpage about a new rear leaf spring that would lower 1st gen. w-bodies from flexaform.com. i e-mailed the company and got a response that he was actually working on the rubber stamp as he wrote me back. this is just a heads up for you all, and if you really want to see the product...i'd keep dropping them e-mails to see it happen!

Yah, that was me that posted it. They have been working on it for a while. They said it would be done about a month ago, so we'll see. A bit pricey at $350. You should have seen the original email that was received from a few people. I will post it if I can find it. We all thought it was a hoax.

...so the actual price is going to be $350?? he didn't give me that information. i guess it'll be a semi-cheaper transition then going with FFPs or Held Motorsports coilover kit. did they say anything regarding the stiffness of the leaf or handling aspects?

I would hve to think that keeping the fiberglass leaf spring would be better in the end for performance then the coilovers...I mean there is a reason they use them on the corvettes

Same here. They really need a demo car demonstrating amount of drop if they want to sell any.

I think they claimed an introductory price of $300.

I don't know why they're strugging with the "rubber stamp", you can buy the rubber bushings through GM!

I still remember why we didn't think this was legit... the guy just sent an email to everyone saying, "Yes we have spring". No indications as to what company he was affiliated with, not even a signature.

What's wrong with your TDC coilovers?

i would pay $350; i've never really been too happy about my TDC coilovers. i would want to see how low it drops the rear first tho.

That sounds kind of "shady" to me man. :)

well...i'd quote malibuolds, but can't figure how to add "malibuolds" to the quote deal. anyway...what's wrong with coil-overs? instead of this whole drop leaf BS rolling out of flex-a-form.com, i was thinking of getting FFP's rear coilovers. the guy who runs the page has had his coils in his lumina z34 for a few years and hasn't had problems.

Personally, I'm scared of the coilovers because I love my car, and the strut towers weren't engineered to be the suspension stress point. Ever heard of metal fatigue? Maybe it wouldn't happen, but I like my car too much to risk it. Maybe if someone has had alignment set, ran their car through some of the worst potholes imaginable at high speeds, and then had alignment rechecked after a year or two, and camber didn't change... THEN I might buy some.

i wondered about it too, but i've seen coil-overs on other w-bodies before. but i'm certain that the towers are stamped out of the same guage steel as current platforms...and 95-99 monte carlos. the guy from FFP said he's had his on for a few years often with 4 people in his car and has no problems whatsoever. it is risky, but totally worthwhile in it's own.

I dont see why it's worthwhile when there's a lowering leaf spring coming out. Why, with factual reasoning, is it worthwhile to use the coilovers now?

Yeah, I've heard that the FFP guy claims the towers are stamped out of the same gauge steel as 95-99 Monte Carlos.

But what does that really matter? The towers are definitly shaped differently. They're flatter in the first-gen W-bodies, and more curved in the Monte. The shape is very important. An illustration of this, is to take a flat sheet of paper and hold it up vertically. Now push it down onto your desktop. It's easy to bend and collapse that paper. Now take the same piece of paper, and curve it vertically. Now it is much stiffer and when you push it against your desk, there will be a lot more resistance. So, shape of the strut towers makes a lot of difference, and they're definitely very differently shaped.

...ah yes, but when is the leaf finally going to come out? the rumor mill has been brewing effortlessly, but i follow rumors about as much as i follow geo storm racing/ford escort drag races.

I wouldn't mind FFP's rear coilovers, but I'd like to see how this new lowering mono-leafspring turns out. If it's $350, that's about half the price of FFP's rear coilover kit. I think it's best to wait and see how things add up in the end before you rush into buying something.

I thought FFP coilovers were $329?

Can someone tell me how to properly quote with a name???

FFP coilovers are like $450 with KYB GR2 struts.

Easy: click on the upper right hand corner button labeled "Quote" on the person you want to address and it'll automatically load it up for you... from there, for mutliple quote within a text box you can follow the expample given.

They don't sell 'em without struts? I was told they do, for $329.

The lowering leaf won't come with struts either, that i'm aware of.

Yes, FFP does sell the coilovers without the struts, $329, I think, like you said Shawn. A new leaf spring shouldnt come with any struts.

Either way, let's wait for this George guy to come out with his lowering mono-leafspring and wait for someone to test it for results. Hell, that person might even be me!
