Cueman
Everyone, I am looking for some help with the ABS/brakes on my 95 Cutlass...I have the local shop stumped and really don't want to take it to the dealer. I have some posts from a year ago but I can give a quick rundown...One day when starting the car the Parking brake and ABS lights come on and stay on soild. First instinct was brake fluid..check, then sensor..I figure I will let that go no big deal...realize about two weeks later that the back brakes are not working because I can still see spots on the back rotors from the last carwash. I take both back wheels off and pull the brake lines off, no fluid! Bleed the hell out of them...nothing. I have found out that there is no proportioning valve, so all of this is done in the master cylinder itself. short of just buying a new master cylinder I want to nail down what parts are not working. What I am looking is anyone with a factory service manual from about 94-97 for a Grand Prix, or a Cutlass, or anything similar. Just maybe a couple of scanned pages regarding the ABS/brake system. Please if anyone has something like this let me know! Thanks in advance! Brian
jdcutty
Maybe a Haynes or a Chiltons will help you out, but Im not sure on that.
Cueman
No, there is nothing in the Chilton that I have too generic, and dosent get into the ABS at all...

White93z34
you could try bleeding the brakes at the ABS unit, i saw some bleeder valves on mine last time i looked.
Crazy K
damn I think my 91 vert with a retrofitted 94 abs may have the same problem.
Cueman
you could try bleeding the brakes at the ABS unit, i saw some bleeder valves on mine last time i looked. Yeah, I tried bleeding both of the valves on the ABS unit..no change. There appears to be two "pumps" or something on the top of the ABS unit. I am guessing that the one that contols the back could be bad. But i am scared to open the unit up and get air inside..how would I test this, maybe just switch the two pumps or whatever they are? Zanix
I have a similar problem with my 97 cutlass supreme. The family mechanic said we'd need to replace the m. cylinder. Edit: I wasn't getting the same lights though. Just the ABS light is on solid.
Cueman
Well, this seems to be a problem in the 94-97 years on the Cutlass, but isn't the Grand Prix the same exact brake system? If so I would think that there are would be a lot of failing master cylinders and or ABS units...No one has a Factory service manual?? I would hate to just replace the master cylinder just to find out the ABS unit is bad!
Regal_GS_1989
FWIW: When we used to have our 99 silverado, the ABS system started running non stop, so we pulled out the relay. With the relay out, The brake light and the ABS light were both on. Yet, if you were to pull just the ABS fuse, only the ABS light would come on.
