gmrulz4u
As I have posted before, when my engine is really hot, the starter doesn't want to do anything, no click , no turn, nothing. So I read a few places that there's a simple test you can do to determine whether it's the starter, battery or connection somewhere. You turn your headlights ON with the engine OFF, and try to start the car. If the headlights go OUT when the key is in the START position, than there is a bad connection somewhere. Well, this is what my car does. So what connections should I be looking at? Obviously when the starter and engine is hot, the resistance must be too high to let the higher current reach the starter or something... Anyone? THANKS! Intlcutlass
I would think the lights would flicker almost 100% of the time reguarless of the condition of the starter. The starter pulls such a draw....
gmrulz4u
Yeah I would assume that as well...but they turn completely off when I turn the key all the way in the ignition...as soon as the key is back in just RUN, they come back on... 1990lumina
I dunno about your car...but my car EVERYTHING turns off accessory wise when I hit the starter...I think it's supposed to do that. My blower fan turns off, lights turn off, etc...
Monkton
I can't seem to remember if my headlights turn off when I start the car from accessory, but my radio resets itself everytime... and so do the interior lights...
GutlessSupreme
I can't seem to remember if my headlights turn off when I start the car from accessory, but my radio resets itself everytime... and so do the interior lights... well yea, you do turn the key to "off" while starting from accessory, so there's why the radio turns off... fastbird232
I dunno about your car...but my car EVERYTHING turns off accessory wise when I hit the starter...I think it's supposed to do that. My blower fan turns off, lights turn off, etc... But not power seats! I know that because my ex was a lot shorter than I was, so everytime I got in the car, I'd be flicking the switch to pull it back and starting the car at the same time. The radio would cut out, but the power seats wouldn't flicker one bit. Always thought it was odd.
Regal_GS_1989
In my car, everything that is switched, stops working when you turn the key to start. The automatic Headlights/ DRL, radio, power windows, blower, everything. If you turn the lights on manually, than they will not turn off when you turn the key to start, becuause at that point, they are no longer switched through the ignition. The unswitched accessories can not turn off becuase, well, they are unswitched and receive their power directly from the battery.
Brian P
What year make and model? If it's newer and has auto headlights, they will shut off while cranking.
jdcutty
If you have your headlights on, and go to start your car, and they turn all the way off, and then come back on (instead of just dimming) I would think that you have a bad battery. Could also be the case when your car is warm, a warm starter will take more amps to turn, and if your battery is bad, then it wont work. I would take it to autozone/advanced and have it tested. 88Regal Limited
also, get a heat shield for your starter. When they get REALLY hot, they tend not to work. I know from experience....
