4t60 versus 4t60E... cross transplantation worthwhile?

Assuming the car is a 93 3.1 powered 4t60e car.... would a transplantination of a regular 4t60 be worthwhile?

To do so you would have to swap the engine harness with the ecm/pcm and prom chip.

 

basically, I am thinking of saving the tranny, ecm, wiring and prom chip from a 92 model 3.1 powered 4t60.

 

this is to ask, which tranny would be better? I've seen the non-electric run nearly forever, after-all....

opinions welcome. thanks

reliability.. yes. think cutlass convertable and I don't plan to buy another car for another million miles. :lol:

btw, you could upgrade a 92 to 93 the same way... (shrugs)

Either/or, it's a toss up depending on how each were treated over their respective lifetimes thus far. I've seen at least a dozen 4T60-E's last well over 250,000 miles. My 200,000 mile 4T60-E residing behind my 3.1 MPFI shifts smoother than a lot of brand new transaxles & it takes multiple WOT runs with stride. As long as you don't beat on them too much and you service the fluid/filter at a decent interval, they'll last you a long time.

200k miles? How often u changed the trans fluid?

 

My 4t60 went out at under 90k and I did change the fluid a couple times.

My '94 LeSabre's 4T60E has 192,000 on it, I have had it serviced twice since buying the car with 60K on it 8 years ago. The last time was just a few months ago and it looked like a new one inside. My driving is about 50% highway and 50% city. Still shifts nice and firm, I don't constantly hammer on it but I don't drive it like a Grandpa either. The trans shop said some of them died around 80 to 90,000 and the rest seem to go forever. The converters were the biggest problem and when the converter went it took the trans with it. If you have a good that has made it over 100,000 keep it serviced and it will very likely outlast the car.

I don't think there is any difference in reliability.

 

If the car had a 4T60-E, I'd probably prefer to keep that for no real reason other than I like how the final drive can be serviced without pulling the tranny.

Keep the 4t60-e, our '88 had the 4t440 (4T60) and the trans went out on it at about 122k, which was before we bought it. Honestly, I don't think it makes a reliablity difference at all.

your going to hear stories from both sides here, my 4t60/4t60e is a POS or is the best ever, your going to hear the same thing from just as many people for both trannies.

 

if the car came with the 4t60e or 4t60 i'd just keep it as it is.

Ya just keep the 4T60-e

 

As much as I'd like to say put in a 4T60 (cause the one in my 88 GP was still fine when I junked it at 177k, and I beat the piss out of it) and the 4T60E in my 95 is burning fluid and shifts hard... I think it's just bad luck. I mean they gotta be pretty damn similar internally right?

I would think so, but going on only personal experience...the 440T4 is a better trans. I lost a 4T60E at 117K miles... :cry:

If it sways anyone's opinion one way or another, my 4T60 has gone out twice! It was rebuilt once in 1999 before I owned it, and then again about 7 months ago (during my ownership) and the damn odometer only shows 92k!

 

Maybe this time it will actually last? So far it runs beautifully.

The 440T4 in my regal has over 243 000 Original miles on it and its still going strong. Doesnt slip, and the fluid is always nice and clean. The 4T60-E in my cutlass also shifts beautifully and doenst slip, which really surprises me after all the crap that got in it after the diff fell apart. Which reminds me, I still want to drop the pan again, because there was still some of the old, black fluid in there that i wasnt able to flush out. :redface:

The first time it was rebuilt, the car wasn't in my possession, it was done by the previous owner. I have no record as to what shop they took it to, but when it needed rebuilding again, I took it to a shop in Ft. Lauderdale and they charged $1800....It better damn last forever for that cost, that's about the value of my entire car right there :evil:

serviceable differential!

DUH I'm gonna transplant the E the other way now!!!!! j/k

 

I'm sold on the E for now.
