Jeff-g-fan-1 Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 I have a 1996 Grand Prix SE 3100 that I want to put a 5 speed in. I have changed transmissions in this car before, so I don't need help with physically putting it in the car. It is a roundy round racecar, so all I need is for the car to go in a circle. I don't care about electronics as long as the car will go into gear and go around the track. What parts do I need and where can I find a tranny.(Ex: what cars were available with the 5 speed.) Quote
jdcutty Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Find a Getrag 282 or 284 in a Junk yard, with all the necessary equipment and swap it in. Good luck though, as they are pretty hard to find. They came in grand prixs and z34s. I have a tranny, but it needs to be rebuilt (in case you are interested in that) Quote
89GP_SE Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 you could get one out of a cavaleir as well, so long as it is matched up with a v6, i dunno wat getrag they are? Quote
jdcutty Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Oh yeah, also a fiero 5 speed, but it would have to be a later model with the 2.8. Even harder to find than a w with one. Quote
red92s Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Fiero, V6 Cavailier, most W-cars came with them. A getrag 282 is more common and you can actually get parts for it, it came with 4 cylinders and smaller v6 (2.8,3.1). The Getrag 284 is stronger it came with the DOHC cars and would probably make a better racing gearbox. The only electronics involved are a vehicle speedsensor and a wire for reverse lights. Since you have a stock car that stuff is meaningless. And btw just a pointer, I think i've said it before. You have a very nice car, but the roll bar padding you have is crap, the roll bar padding most people have is crap. You should get the high density type. (Look at any Nextel cup or big deal sedan or GT car) KIRKEY sells it, you'd be much better off. Quote
brianteel Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 the fiero and the cavi and sunbird will not work. the trans has to come form a w-body. this si for a 3800 motor but will help you a bit http://www.l67swap.com/forum/cms_view_article.php?aid=6 Quote
stockgp Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 i don't see why the trans would have to come from a w. he would just ahve to change the intermediate shaft and housing and find w driveshafts Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 it is because the W-body 282 case has a place where you can bolt the tranny mount onto the bottom. i haven't yet looked closely at an N-body or Fiero 282 case, but i know a J or L-body 282 will not work unless you somehow made custom mounts to use it in a W-body. and not only that, the J/L 282s i seen have an external slave cylinder so you'd have to make a mount for that too. it doesn't just bolt onto the case like they do in a W-body. stockgp Posted June 10, 2006 Report Posted June 10, 2006 oh i see. well, learn something new every day i guess Quote
Jeff-g-fan-1 Posted June 10, 2006 Author Report Posted June 10, 2006 I have a tranny, but it needs to be rebuilt (in case you are interested in that) 1.) whats wrong with it 2.) how much $ do you want Quote
Jeff-g-fan-1 Posted June 10, 2006 Author Report Posted June 10, 2006 As for the roll bar padding, it's all my dad and I have ever used, and it seems to work fine, but I'll look into the high density stuff. Quote
jdcutty Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 I have a tranny, but it needs to be rebuilt (in case you are interested in that) 1.) whats wrong with it 2.) how much $ do you want It leaked, and doesn't like to go into gear now from being ran low on fluid. That is why it needs to be rebuilt. I dont know how much they would rape you for shipping, but I will let it go for how ever much you wanna pay for it. Quote
Jeff-g-fan-1 Posted June 11, 2006 Author Report Posted June 11, 2006 where do you live, maybe I could come pick it up? Quote
jdcutty Posted June 11, 2006 Report Posted June 11, 2006 where do you live, maybe I could come pick it up? Flint, Michigan, It would cost you a lot more in gas to come get it, then it would to ship it. Quote
