What is this and what does it do?

As the title states, what is this thing i have circled. There wasnt one on my 93 Auto Z, but there is one on this 92 5speed Z. The reason that i am asking is because the hose on the side is extremely brittle and is falling off, and plus the hose leads down into some weird looking thing under the fuse panel on the left side. I will try to get some pics tomarrow so i can show yall what i am talking about.

It appears to be the tube for the AIR pump. It's an emissions control that injects clean air into the exhaust, I'm not completely sure why, but I think it makes the catalytic converter work better.

I don't know why, but it only came on 5-speed cars.

Yep, as Shawn said.

I'm not sure if you can purchase new lines anymore or not, but they are all over JY's if you want to keep the system on your car.

When i first looked at it closely, the hose was off and it was actually blowing air away from the manifold, not into it. Will it cause any problems if the hose falls off completely?

Only problem I'm aware of is increased emissions.

Oh, I just found this nice little informative page: http://www.carcare.org/Emission_Control/air_pump.shtml

I guess it could affect the catalytic converter too, but I've honestly never heard of anyone reporting that. Some people remove the air pump because it does rob a little power from the engine (although probably very very little).

Is this also the case for the 5-speed 3.1 engines.

When i pulled it from the GP there was another accessory that is driven by a second pulley, this accessory has a tube to the exhaust manifold.

Can this be removed without a problem?

wait, i thought it was on later engines? (ie, the '96 i bought from sean had them)
