ExZion
So today i was rollling down the road taking my girlfriend home and i look down and the SES light is on? Now i cant seem to remember if my 94 cutlass supreme 3100 is obd1 or not. possible causes? every thing on the car is original ( Including all sensors) and it just rolled 91,000mi. Any ideas? ** edit i forgot to mention that when i restarted it and drove home the light did not come on. **
19Cutlass94
Take it to advance or some place can bring up the code and tell you what is it. Without that your not going to fair too good.
Dark Ride
'94 is OBD 1 isn't it? If it is just do the paperclip trick to pull codes. Good Luck, Mitch
stevegasm
I don't think ODB II came out untill '96 ('95 for some vehicles). If it came on then went off after restarting, it could be emissions-related. Most auto parts stores will pull the codes off for you, I know AutoZone does SES codes for free. DiscoStudd
FYI, 94-95 3100's have what's typically refered to as OBD 1.5 (they're still OBD-I, but with a flash PCM that can neither be "chipped" nor have the trouble codes retrieved via the ole paper clip trick, just like the OBD-II PCM's...) slick
How did the car act? Any problems? When, during the trip, did the SES light come on? How was the weather? Operating temperature of the vehicle when it came on? I'm just going to see if we can narrow this down before you get it scanned, mainly because a lot of places don't know what to do when you get an OBD 1.5 vehicle in there. But, hopefully you can get it scanned though.
ExZion
Car seemed to run fineand the temp was normal. it came on just rolling down the road at 45 around 2,000 RPMS, it was a killer HOT day. Since then it has not come on at all and the car is running normally. Maby just a fluke?
jdcutty
Bet it is a code 32.
Dark Ride
Bet it is a code 32. Code 32 = EGR system, Just saying Code 32 probably doesn't help him much. Does it idle high at all? Cuz on my 3.1 (OBD 1 ) If it stores a code (Depending on the code) it will run off default fuel tables. (ie Map Sensor, O2 sensor, etc.) when it did this it always idled high for Me. Just a thought. Can You just disconnect the battery to clear codes on OBD 1.5? Unless your dead set on getting codes checked, I would just clear codes and if it happens again then have them checked. ExZion
Now tonight the light came on and i restarted the car and the light remains on... how do i get it checked to see what code its pulling?
Dark Ride
You'll probably have to take it into a shop to have them check since its OBD 1.5 Unless you know someone with a code scanner. Mitch
ExZion
well i got up this morning and drove down the road no ses. but on my way back when the cars temp had risen to operating temp the ses light came back on... could this be o2 related and when the car starts runing off the o2 it realizes that its bad? ExZion
it pulled a code 77...
stevegasm
it pulled a code 77... Did Advance explain what it was? My handy-dandy code book (a.k.a Google) says something along the lines of a dirty EGR valve or solenoid.
ExZion
yeah it said a malfunction of egr soleniod #3. But since the light has not came back, idle is back to normal, and rich smell is gone..?
19Cutlass94
Does the light come on when your going 45mph, or let off the gas around that speed? I had the same thing happen to me with the EGR, solenoid #3. The port from the back of the TB to the EGR was clogged with carbon. I realized that AFTER I put a brand new EGR on. I cleaned it with some intake cleaner and a clothes hanger. About an hour of your time will fix it.
ExZion
Exactly what happens... the mechanic that has worked on my car since new said the same thing. Any pics on how to do it. im not very brave working on the olds with my dad (the original owner/buyer) watching unless i know exactly what i am doing. 19Cutlass94
I dont have any pictuers of how to do it. But.... All I did was I took the TB off, then I took the EGR off. I cut a small piece of clothes hanger and bent it so I could use it. I also used a small mirror so I could see inside the port. Basically all you do is jam the hanger in there and try to break up the carbon the best you can. You have to get it from inside the plenum and where the EGR mounts. Theres a small hole in there. Spray a little intake cleaner in there as you go along, itll help out. Basically keep jamming the clothes hanger in there until you can get it to come out the other side. ExZion
so all i have to rip off is the TB not the Upper intake?
19Cutlass94
The TB and EGR is all you need to take off. The Plenum can stay on.
ExZion
alright i might play with it tomarrow or sat.
