gtannenb Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 I hope you can help me diagnose my problem. I have a 1995 Monte Carlo with a 3.1 engine. The engine only has 63,000 miles. For the second time in a week, the car would not smoothly shift into 1st gear when cold. From a stop, I would take my foot off the brake and the car would start to roll forward. When I stepped on the gas, I would hear a clunk and the engine would race. After 2 or 3 tries of stepping on the gas, it would finally catch 1st gear. This would happen for the first few stops in the morning and then would work fine. I has not occured every morning, only twice out of the last 4 days. I have checked the transmission fluid and it is good, maybe a little overfilled. Anyone have any ideas if this a serious transmission problem or something else. I love the car but do not feel it is worth putting in a new transmission. Thanks. Quote
SleeperRed90TGp Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 Sounds like your input sprag. if it's free wheeling in first with gas and then bangs in thats probly what it is. Jud Quote
gtannenb Posted June 5, 2006 Author Report Posted June 5, 2006 I am a novice with transmissions. Is this a serious problem that would require the transmission to be rebuilt? Pontiac6KSTEAWD Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 Start with the basics first. Take it in to get a tranny service done. Filter, fluid, and gasket. Quote
