Possible Transmission Problem

I hope you can help me diagnose my problem. I have a 1995 Monte Carlo with a 3.1 engine. The engine only has 63,000 miles. For the second time in a week, the car would not smoothly shift into 1st gear when cold. From a stop, I would take my foot off the brake and the car would start to roll forward. When I stepped on the gas, I would hear a clunk and the engine would race. After 2 or 3 tries of stepping on the gas, it would finally catch 1st gear. This would happen for the first few stops in the morning and then would work fine. I has not occured every morning, only twice out of the last 4 days. I have checked the transmission fluid and it is good, maybe a little overfilled.

Anyone have any ideas if this a serious transmission problem or something else. I love the car but do not feel it is worth putting in a new transmission.

Thanks.

I am a novice with transmissions. Is this a serious problem that would require the transmission to be rebuilt?
