White93z34 Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 everywhere i go parts stored want to sell me some real tiny muffler as a replacement for the rather large factory mufflers. i don't want to look retarted running around with a mismatched set, and frankly i don't care for how the small ones look. so does anyone know where (aside of the obvious dealer answer) that i can source these at? fastbird232 Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 The guy at Midas said there are primary and secondary mufflers on 3.4 cars. But he didn't know quite what to say when I showed him that both of my former-car's stockers were both the same size. Quote

"...but I don't want to convert my car to a Cadillac..." But to answer your question, I would try the junkyard and/or eBay Quote

Early 3.4 exhuast 94 and before had a muffler and a resonator muffler, they are different prices and slightly different sizes. As for where to get them, CarQuest is the one I think. Quote
White93z34 Posted June 5, 2006 Author Report Posted June 5, 2006 i fail to see what you are talking about...the order of exhaust on every 3.4 car i've seen has been cat-con, resonator, and the mufflers. not to sound like an ass but what is this resonator muffler you are talking about? and thanks for the tip i think theres a carquest around here. fastbird232 Posted June 5, 2006 Report Posted June 5, 2006 The one on the left would be a small resonator muffler, the other would be the regular muffler. Quote
White93z34 Posted June 5, 2006 Author Report Posted June 5, 2006 both of mine are the same size, as are every stock 3.4 exhaust i've seen Quote
Addicted2bass Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 I work for Napa. Our book shows the left muffler smaller then the right on my 96 GP with the 3.1, but im pretty sure the same system is used for the 3.4. Ill double check tomorrow. My car has the smaller left muffler, but im pretty sure neither are factory. I think its kinda stupid, but you can only see the size differance if you are under the car. Quote
fastbird232 Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 Odd... I've never seen a GP with different sized mufflers. Quote
stevegasm Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 on the '95 z34 monte i had, it looked like the mufflers were the same size... Quote
mfewtrail Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 My '93 3.1 car with the stock "dual" exhaust had the identically sized mufflers, as well as every other W-body I've seen with the factory "dual" setup. Quote
Z34-5speed Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 My 92 Z34 had two differant sized mufflers. The left muffler was alot smaller than the right one. They were the original mufflers too, because my old 93 Z34 had the same setup, smaller left muffler. Kyle Quote
fastbird232 Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 What'd they do, flip a coin on the assembly line? Quote
blkinternational Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 on my gp exaust the left is bigger then the right.... im taking my mufflers off there in decent condition so if u want them there urs but its up to u Quote
slick Posted June 6, 2006 Report Posted June 6, 2006 My 94 GP's mufflers were the exact same, stock mufflers. My 93 Z34's mufflers were the exact same mufflers as well. Chris, you know what type of mufflers I would get. You even mentioned how well you liked the sound of them. Quote
Addicted2bass Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 I checked our book at napa today. The 91 and 92 Z34 had the same size, but the 93 and 94 have a smaller left muffler. As do all GPs (3.1 and 3.4) of that bodystyle. Usually our parts are identical to OEM, but this could be an exception. Quote
chadz34 Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 on the '95 z34 monte i had, it looked like the mufflers were the same size... Yes, becuase 95 and 96 DOHC's had a different exhuasts etup, it went cat, resonator and two mufflers (same size). The earlier DOHC's were cat, and one resonator muffler and a regular muffler. Which is why they are different sizes. Quote
ToroToro Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 I seem to remember Petty's SE having two different sized mufflers I think, or there was a car on eBay or something....I know I've seen a blue GP 3.4 with two different mufflers somewhere. Quote

Damn it I just said they had different sized mufflers until 95. So any GP you have seen with different mufflers were pre-95. The exhaust from 95 to 97 is more restrictive becuase it has an additional muffler. I looked under my 92 Lumina Z34 and my 96 Lumina 3.4. They are COMPLETELY different set-ups. 91-94 DOHC cars do not have two mufflers.....one is a resonator with a tailpipe on it....that is why it's smaller. Quote
ToroToro Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 No shit...I probobly knew that before you did. I was just making that statement because someone said they never seen a GP with two different mufflers. Christ. Quote
White93z34 Posted June 9, 2006 Author Report Posted June 9, 2006 so chad want to post pictures of your 92's exhaust setup, even if it isan't 100% relevant to my car since mine is a 93. magnaflows, i keep hearing that they are $125ish each. i refuse to pay that for any muffler. i'll try and resolve this tommrow when i stop in at the dealer. I don't have the car at home or I would. I already let you know the order for the 92. It's cat, and then one resonator and a muffler on the other side. CAT MUFFLER RESONATOR That is what it looks like, one of the mufflers on the back are a resonator. For the 96' It's a cat, resonator and two mufflers. \ Quote
White93z34 Posted June 9, 2006 Author Report Posted June 9, 2006 the ONLY reason i feel you have any credabiity here is that your z34 is as bone stock as the come with barely any miles on it. thats why i want to see pictures so i can have some idea what the factroy setup looked like. but i should be at the dealer tommrow i'll see if they have any idea what this setup is supposed to be like for 1993, and it really woulden't suprise me if they changed the setup from 92 to 93, since they changed a bunch of other random shit for no real reason.
