neville07 Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 Hey guys. My sister has a 93 Lumina with a 3.1L. It is not a Lumina Euro. She needs to get the Serpentine belt replaced. I was just wondering if I need to jack up the engine to take of the belt, because one of the engine mounts, mounts to the block right in between the pulleys like in the N-bodies. Thanks. Quote
NOHC_WBody Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 Just get an appropriate sized ratchet (a 3/8ths, IIRC), rotate the tensioner to release the tension on the belt, and slide the old one off the alternator/ps pump/water pump pullies first, then the A/C & crank pulley. Installation is the reverse. Put it over the crank pulley, and follow the diagram in the engine compartment, as to the belt routing. Put the ratchet back in the tensioner, and rotate it so you can get the belt around it. Quote
cmo1234 Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 NOHC, I'm not sure it is that easy, although I'm surprised that a 93 Lum with a 3.1 would have this issue. It would normally be as easy as you described but what neville described is an issue that I thought was only on 3100s. My bro was gonna change his belt on is 2000 Malibu and we were both like WTF?? There is an engine mount right in the middle of all the pullies/belt that ties to the right side of the car. So once you get the belt off its still hung up around the engine mount. So I have not figured it out yet, I'm not sure my bro did either but he was going to check on a N?? body (Malibu) site to see how to. I will reply back when i hear. Quote
Whiskey River Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 I have a '92 Lumina with a 3.1L (Vin T) and there is absolutely nothing preventing me from removing the belt, other than the tensioner pulley. Quote
Brian P Posted April 25, 2003 Report Posted April 25, 2003 Remove that little plastic shield, and loosen tensioner. That's it. You may remove the coolant bottle for easier access Quote
chronic139 Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 you can probably just take that mount off without too much problems because your not running the engine or anything. If you want, just in case, put a floor jack underneath that side of the engine. Just make sure you put a block off wood or something in between. Quote
Black Pheonix Posted April 26, 2003 Report Posted April 26, 2003 If i pull up on the idler pulley the belt will come right off. Should be a pretty easy thing to do. Quote
Brian P Posted April 28, 2003 Report Posted April 28, 2003 A note for 2.8/3.1 owners. I just installed that little black cover from a 94+ 3100 (between water pump and p/s pump) which makes changing the belt take about 10-30 seconds. You don't have to remove it- it bolts in only 1 spot on the timing cover (where the long bolt normally goes) whammo Quote
