should the tranny be rebuilt?

My sister owns a 96 cutlass 3100 that needs transmission work. The gears and clutches work fine, but the shift solonoids are shot so only 2nd and 3rd gears work. I suggested that she have any transmission rebuilt before I put it in (to replace the solenoids is just as difficult as pulling the tranny). She wants to get a used tranny. She still owes me about 1000 for the car and a rebuild I'm told will cost about 450. Is it completely idiotic to not have the transmission rebuilt before swapping it in?

Why not rebuild the old one? If I'm reading right, you're expecting to remove and install a transmission either way, and rebuilding the old one means no one has to pay for another transmission.
