pwmin
so my lazy way of painting my wheels has resulted in the white paint coming off. besides that, i hate painting them, so i want to strip all the paint off and repaint them some sort of gunmetal color so i dont notice brake dust. i tried tal-strip brush on and it was a royal pain and only worked okay on the white paint not the stock paint. the aircraft stripper spray stuff works okay, but can get sort expensive. anyone have any suggestions on a the best way to strip all the paint? i know refinishing wheels has been talked about a lot, but i dont think the threads go into any detail on my specific question. thanks

It's easy to do(no work in your part besides dropping off and picking up the wheels), but will probably cost you a pretty penny... The good thing about the chem dip though is that it will pretty much take off any sort of chemical(paint, rust, etc...).
pwmin
what do they dip it in? would a bucket of carb cleaner work or is that just stupid?
slick
what do they dip it in? would a bucket of carb cleaner work or is that just stupid? Not really sure, but I would imagine something that definately isn't safe to be around without a nice mask or safe for the environment for that matter. Chem-dipping is, from what I understand, the best way to ready a car to be restored, and to clean out intake manifolds. It gets rid of all the rust, olds, paint, etc... and leave it with bare metal. ToroToro
Dipping would be the best, but if you dont care to have the tires removed, the aircaft stripper is probobly the best way. It WILL take off all the factory paint, but it does take a few coats and some light scraping. Best thing to do is let it sit an hour or so too. I did all four of my rims with three cans, so figure 20 bucks. I dont think you should really have to strip off the factory paint though. Should be okay to paint over as long as you dont use cheap ass primer and paint. Maybe just rough the finish up with some 800 grit first. Justin
Aircraft stripper is extremely nasty stuff, if you put it on car paint you can hear the paint lift off the metal. That's what I'd use if I were you. You can get it in a large metal gallon jug, might be cheaper that way. Just brush it on and let it do it's job. I'm pretty sure supremestyle used it on wheels at some point, thought I remembered him talking about it. Maybe he'll chime in.
