slick
What is the average life of the 3100? My car has almost 127,000 miles on the original engine, with oil changed every 3000 miles, and its never been driven hard. I kinda want this thing to die so I can swap in a 3800 . 91GranSport
I know how you feel, I feel that way about my computer. If it crashes and burns then I'll have an excuse to go out and pick up a nice multimedia powerhouse and WinXP. But seriously though, the 3100 SFI should last a long time, especially when you're always taking care of it. It probably isn't as reliable as the 3800 Series II but it is still a kick-ass GM engine that'l last a long time. I think I've heard of people going up into the 180,000-200,000 mile range on their 3100 SFIs without ever blowing anything up. Your brakes, shocks, electronics and even your paint is more likely to go bad before your engine.
slick
I just redid my brakes last weekend, what a pain in the ass when you brake studs off because you were in too big of a hurry putting your lugs on!
18incholdz
My 3100 has 144,000 on it, and it still runs fine...the shocks, paint, and brakes have all went, but that engine, she lives on!
JS91Z34
I've seen these 3100's with 250,000 miles on them. If your in a hurry to get rid of it, run it out of oil. Otherwise your stuck with it for a while.
gimp19
How about a 2.8 mine was grandma owned and well taken care of for 12 years then I got it. I dont drive it that hard, change the oil every 3,000mi, and it only has 106,000 on it right now.

[/quote] I'm not gonna do that! I take good care of all my cars that I have, but I was mainly wondering how much longer this engine would last me. Whats the life of the tranny's on these. In a couple weeks, im gonna get it in to get the tranny drained and filter changed, with a new tranny pan gasket of course.

Brian P
Proper maintenance results: The motor will last a long time. The transmission will last a long time. I just don't get it. Like minimum half of the people here want to just do these magical swaps. Who's doing them? Shop? Relative? Grandma? Tell ya what, if half of this board wants to take their 2.8/3.1/3100's out in favor of a 3.8, I'll be more than happy to take your old engines. ismellrealbad
i could give a shit less about 40hp all from a swap. i ordered my intake and once i get it i should be happy. im delivering pizzas with my car and ill admit i run it hard as hell. i just changed the oil about a month ago and already i have 3k miles put on, im gunna change it again real soon. the spark plugs have been changed and the coolant was completly flushed with new stuff. im prolly gunna change the oil again soon. im lookin to have the tranny fluid changed very soon also. i can guarantee in 72k mi its never been changed and 1st-2nd shifts seem kinda jerkey when im on the gas. i have the money the only thing that stopping me is i cant afford to not have my car right now even for 1 day. so right now its a matter of time. shit i cant even find the time to wash my car....or lately just post on this board! blah

I wish I had everyones spare 2.8 and 3.1s. I would have a good time fixing them up. Engine swaps dont magically happen, especially with the wiring that goes into them. When everyone gets their 3.8s swapped in, send me and Brian your old motors Robby

DOHCRagtopguy
My last ragtop was a 92 Z-24 with the 3.1 and it had 189K on it when I sold it. The guy that bought it just e-mailed me a couple of weeks ago bragging about how great it's still running. It was just leaking a little oil thru the distributor dummy shaft when I sold it to him. Cutty Hertz
Hell, my 2.8l is knocking on 400,000mi's door, and the only thing I know of that's wrong with it is that it sometimes doesn't go (at all) when I hit the gas. And I never change the oil since I had the car which would be a year in a month. Yeah, I know. I'm a sorry owner. I want a 3800 II because there are more performance parts for it, and I wanna be a rice killer....
