nerfbars Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I have a 89 Cutlass with a 2.8L. I just had a freshly rebuilt 3100 Vin M out of a 1994 given to me. Is it possible to swap it for my 2.8L Do I just need to use a new prom? With the motor mounts and wiring work? Also I need a upper intake and plenum for this motor if anyone has one for sale. Quote
Robby1870 Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I dont think the dogbones from your 2.8 will work, and yes you would need a new computer Robby Quote
Brian P Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 yes you can swap it right in, very little modification necessary, and yeap you can use your upper mounts. Also wiring is at a minimum, you can have your current computer control it Quote
Brian P Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I should also add that it'd run better with a 3.1L memcal, but you'll need one from an '89 due to your egr. But when converting to an 89 memcal you'll need to swap out your speed sensor on your tranny with an '89 one otherwise you'll get false readings. This will also remove your MAF sensor if you never got the recall taken care of. As for the upper plenum, get one from a 94-95 because it will have the proper mounting for the EGR. Hope this helps Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 Didn't 94-95 have a Digital EGR? In that case, his ECM can't control the EGR without running more wires and using a 90-92 MEMCAL. 96+ uses Linear EGR which is pin compatible with Vacuum EGR, although the connectors may be different. The signals Linear EGR requires (PWM Duty Cycle to control EGR opening) is also very similar to Vacuum EGR. I don't know that Linear EGR will actually work in place of the vacuum EGR, but the signals are pretty much the same. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 I know my '94 Cutty has the digital EGR. How can he use a 3.1 chip? Doesn't the 3100 have a cam sensor that the 2.8/3.1 didn't have? Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 It does, but he doesn't have to use it! He'd need to use wiring from the original 3.1L. That will make the injectors bank-fired instead of sequential, so the cam sensor will just be unused. Quote
Brian P Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 The vacuum EGR will bolt right onto the manifold for the 90-95 digital EGR Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Ah I see! I had no idea they kept the adapter plate. Quote
