excelsior
93 SHO. I know its not a W Body but stil.... I just drove down to Alabama last week from Indiana. Car had no problems. It just had a muffler replaced but the mechanic said that it should be good to go down here. Since I have been here it had no problems. However yesterday it wouldnt start during the day. Later that evening it started up first try I drove it around for a little bit and it ran fine. Today it wont start at all. Now, all electrical components are fine like the power windows, radio, and what not. Sooo i think its not electrical. It wont crank. I checked the fuel reset thing to make sure there was no problems there and there wasnt. Any ideas?
Slade901
so the car will start when cold? If no crank situation happens, I always use a remote starter ( 2 clips and a button in the middle). I just hook up one end on the + terminal on the battery and the other on the starter, I just push the button and then I'll know if the problem is ignition switch related or starter solenoid. There have been issues where the starter gets too hot when it's located near the exhaust manifold. Some folks protect the starter /starter solenoid by wrapping it heat shield around $
excelsior
I parked it in the shade all day today...but of course it was still 90 + here. If the starter got too hot does that mean it is permenantly damaged or is it an issue where I can go start it up and run it to an auto-zone/wal mart type place and protect the starter? Slade901
It usually does not cause the starter to get damaged permanently when it gets too hot. It just shorten the life of the starter. As the starter temp goes down then it will start working again. Here's the shield I'm talking about where you just wrap it around the starter to protect it if it is near the exhaust manifold http://www.autobarn.net/stheshbyth.html Just make sure your battery is fully charged and not drained out. It would help if you have a battery charger/engine starter and that way you can charge up the battery to make sure it is fully charged and you can jump start a vehicle with that battery charger/engine starter. When you manually jumped the starter directly with a remote starter, does the starter makes a noise at all trying to rotate the flywheel? Make sure that the bolts that the starter is held is not loose as it might not align the gears of the starter to the gears of the flywheel. Make sure your alternator is still good and probably on it's way out and not properly charging the battery. Enough charge to power accessories but not enough to rotate the engine. If your vehicle is running again, local autozone can test your alternator and battery while they are still on the vehicle for testing purposes.
