Transmission won't shift...I think

First of all I am only 15, so go easy on the comments. I have a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix that I have made into a circle track car. It has the 3100 V6 and an auto trans. I would like some help figuring out why it won't downshift into 1st. I manually shift it into 2nd, but it never actually shifts into a gear while accelerating. It just stays in whatever gear it seems to be stuck in. At about 80 mph, it's turning about 4500 rpm's. Please help!

i think if i remember right that you cant keep it in first for whatever reason, but you can keep it in second or third. something with the computer and how its set up? you could wire a switch into the vss, which keeps it from shifting into second :dunno:

WOOT!!!! A circle track W. What kinda cars do you run against?? Anyway, if you have access to a scanner of some sort, it could be a suck shift solenoid. Or did the car ever have a 2nd gear start feature?? Im not sure if that would keep if from going into manual 1st though.

The car has a second gear start feature, but I have it turned off. Also forgot to mention, if I put it in first manually, it runs the same as it does in 2nd.

P.S. The cars I run against are neons, accords, mazda 626's, and a monte carlo, but the only competition is the monte carlo. We beat all the others easily by a half a lap, on a 3/8 mile oval in a 15 lap feature.

I'm not trying to keep it in first, I just want to start out there. I also need first gear to load the car onto the trailer.
