Im replacing the lower intake manifold gasket on my 3.1 If this is where the coolant is leaking from, should i do the head gaskets right away or not. 140,000 miles, and how much more work will it be.

I wouldn't touch them with that many miles if they haven't gone now they never will. It would be stupid to chang them when there is no problem, infact you might be inviting problems. The LIM is a common problem, the head gaskets are not.

One who knows.

I just replaced a 3100 set of head gaskets at 125k miles one was totally shot the other was failing soon. Go for it you will be sorry you did not if u are keeping the car.

Inspect the rear head well, look for remote signs of wetness. For the amount of money it costs to get a head set instead of an intake set, you really should get them checked and even possiby have the seals done as well. A lot of the 3400's have head gasket issues and the 3100 is virtually the same thing. Not doubting anyones opinion but for the little extra $ you spend it is worth it if you are keeping it.

I think 3400s have problems with headgaskets alot more than 3100s, at least from what I've seen at the dealership.

When I found coolant in my oil I just changed the LIM (bought the parts to do the headgaskets as well, but then returned them). When I got down to the LIM gaskets I saw how fucked they were and realized the headgaskets were probably fine, so I didn't bother. Saved myself $150 on the stupid OEM stuff. My car has about 140k as well..

hey we all know we cant diagnose cars online.

for the amount of work it would take, not to mention cash to do the intakes all over, its worth it just to do it and not worry about it anymore. then you know its all good.

I would at least buy the parts to do it, return if you don't think you need them. If you find that the LIM is not where the leak is coming from, then at least you got the parts to do the HG.

i think i will just do the head gaskets since i am down that far. the kit comes with everything so i can't just return the head gaskets. How much more of a pain in the ass is it going to be?

Doing the head gaskets on these motors is at least 3x harder than just doing the LIM gaskets, the biggest pain being that fucking front motor mount bracket that the A/C compressor is on.

Yes that bracket totally sucks, becareful not to pinch the crank sensor wires under that bracket when bolting it back on (LIKE I JUST DID)!! Also make sure you carefully mark which push rod came from where... or put them in an upside down cardboard box the same way they came out... because I think the exhaust rods are 5/8" longer than the intake rods. Even though the job is a little more difficult I would still replace the gaskets.

I would do the headgaskets if you got them and can't return them. And you say the LIM don't look that bad....

You DO have coolant in the oil, right? That would suck to do all this work for nothing..

ALSO, and i forgot to mention this. Yesterday when i went to start the car, it would stay running on its own. I had to hold the gas, otherwise it would die. Then finally it started and ran on its own. I also drove it. Then today, i went to relieve the presure and the fuel rail, and there was none. All i did was unhook the lines and thats it. Do i have myself another problem. Also should i worry about the o-ring where the distributor plug is?
