Hey guys,

I tried to search this but nothing came up

What is the recommended gas octane fo the LQ-1 engine inmy Lumina? Should I just put 87 in it? or something higher?

87. Why, what have you been putting in it?

Well, when we were working on the car we just put in a 3rd of a tank of 87 just to get around. I'm finally able to really start driving it this week. So I haven't put anything in it yet, but my bro just thought that because its kind of an upscale performance engine, it might need a higher grade fuel to run its best. We didn't know what was recommended because we don't have the owner's manual. My Dad's Daytona Shelby Z recommends "premium".

So 87 is fine for all the time. Ok great, thanks.

The Lumina's previous owner ran the car on Ethanol E-10 actually. (90% gas 10% eth.)

Actually I have to take it for an emissions test tomorrow, and I'm gonna put in some Sunoco94 just this once to help it pass. I went for a drive today cause I was finally able to legally drive it, nice on the highway. Signals are way too slow though.

i dont care what engine it is. We did a test in chem on diffrent gas octanes and after that i will never run anything but 93 or 94

Why? It's a waste of money unless you have some sort of mod that requires you to use premium..

And don't tell me it's cleaner

i used premium all the time up til a week or so ago. midgrade for now til price goes down. it seemed to run a tiny bit smoother with it, but it could be psychological

You run higher octane to reduce/resist detonation. LQ1s don't have any problem running 87 octane. They were DESIGNED to run 87 octane. Anything else is a waste.

I run/ran premium in the Cutlass, but I'm also chipped and have jacked up timing. There's no point in running premium fuel in a stock engine.

Here we go again, class:

The octane rating is the fuel's resistance to burn. Fuel that won't burn is well.. a problem in an engine with stock timing and low compression. If you're running 93 in a stock naturally aspirated 60º motor, you're pissing money away. Simple as that.

we did a study on it and had a guy come in to our auto shop in high school and it was conclusive that anything ove the rating does little to nothing to help you out, the cost is not justified. BTW all the gas in MICH is 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline from 86-94 octance
