jdcutty
So i was on my way home from work, I turned onto a side street and my car didn't wanna come out of 5th gear. A couple of tries, and it went into neutral, and that is where it stayed. It will no longer go into gear :frown:. So now I get to swap out the tranny, and I need to do it quick. I am going to start when I get up, by finding a garage to pull it in. Luckily a spare tranny came with the car, but I dont know the history of it so hopefully it is in good condition. So is dropping the a-arm and suspension and pulling it through the wheel well the easiest way to go about this? And if anyone near me has experience at this, and has some free time that they can spare to give me a hand, it would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to the fun that lies ahead. dbtk2
make sure its not the shift cables first. Definately make sure first! My Calais kept stretching and breaking shift cables when I had that car, and sometimes it would stick in 5th gear and wouldn't come out. To get it out of 5th I'd have to disconnect the linkage on the trans (for the up/down cable) and then have someone else hold the shifter to the side and then after not too long I could usually get it to come out of 5th. Put it in neutral and reconnect the linkage. A PITA but much better than replacing the trans and having it not fix the problem anyways. CHECK CABLES FIRST! turby
That what my CS did. Had to yank it out of gear and slam it into gear. Changed the clutch and nothing. Ended up being the slave cylinder. Try putting it in 1st gear and start it. See if the car moves without letting up on the clutch.
jdcutty
Well, it wasn't the cables, and I couldn't put it into gear at all even if the car wasn't running. i finally got the tranny swapped in, after about 20 hours of work (first timer). I also installed the front lowering springs while I had all of the suspension off. Looks pretty good. New tranny is now working flawlessly. Canada
That what my CS did. Had to yank it out of gear and slam it into gear. Changed the clutch and nothing. Ended up being the slave cylinder. Try putting it in 1st gear and start it. See if the car moves without letting up on the clutch. The problem with that, is that the weight of the car is working against the clutch. A better way of testing to see if the clutch is fully releasing is to start the car in neutral and release the pedal. Step in the clutch, count 9 seconds. Select a non-scynroed gear (typically reverse). It should fall into place without grinding. This way, the only thing slowing the input shaft down, is the shaft itself. With te weight of the car against the clutch, it might be enough to not detect the minor bit the clutch isn't releasing.
