dkorinko Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I am getting a SES light for this sensor so I am going to go ahead and replace it, I was just wondering if anyone here would happen to know where it is located....Thank you! Quote
sl3196 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 You may need to get a case learn done since you put in that new pcm. 97-2003 Engine CASE learn procedure: 1. Turn the key to on position 2. Turn Tech II on 3. Select the Diagnostics Menu 4. Select Car Information (Year, Make, Engine, Etc.) (Make sure they enter 1998 as the year.) (Also you will be asked what type of product line/type. It is a single letter code. Which corresponds to the first letter in your VIN) 5. Select Special Functions. 6. Select Variable Crankcase Learn Procedure. 7. Follow On Screen Directions. The Crankcase Learn Procedure is going to ask the Technician to do the following: 1. Put E-brake On. 2. Make sure car is in neutral or park. 3. Turn engine on 4. Rev Car to Rev Limiter (car will hit limiter at 3,000 RPM) 5. Wait about 5 seconds. 6. Rev Car to Rev Limiter (The car will this time hits about 5,500 to 6,000 RPM) 7. Wait about 5 seconds. 8. Car is done. Quote
dkorinko Posted May 9, 2006 Author Report Posted May 9, 2006 I thought since my car was a 97 you didnt have to do that??? Besides, the car has been throwing the code since I bought it, its nothing that has happened since I changed the PCM Quote
99RegalGS Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 Just being curious, what's the code? The sensor can't be completely toast because the car still starts. Quote
firefighter_0029 Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 The Sensor can be bad and the car can still start. Every once in a while It will have a misfire or it will hesitate or something like that. 3800's are totally different motors than 2.8's or 3.1's. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 I've seen them start and run with a bad sensor. They'll just run like ass. Quote
dkorinko Posted May 10, 2006 Author Report Posted May 10, 2006 The Sensor can be bad and the car can still start. Every once in a while It will have a misfire or it will hesitate or something like that. 3800's are totally different motors than 2.8's or 3.1's. Which is exactly what my car does, sometimes I will be driving and the car will fall flat on its face, other times it will stall once I come to a stop and then it will take a minute or two before the thing will restart, pretty annoying. 99RegalGS Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 It's the 3 wire sensor on the front side of the throttlebody. Quote
john99gtp Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 yea at least your car starts mines still dead in the water, and the CKP is suspect for now, but i cant work on it, since im getting home to late and theres no daylight left. as far as a case learn, you dont have to do it when you swap PCMs, but swapping the CKP, i dunno. If you know where the sensor is lemme know, i need to check the harness that it connects too. I really dont wanna dig BACK into my new engine Quote
99RegalGS Posted May 12, 2006 Report Posted May 12, 2006 If you want I can take a picture of the CKP and TPS sensor connectors. Might take me a bit to get them hosted because I won't have my lappy for another 10 days and I don't remember any of my ftp stuff. lol Quote
dkorinko Posted May 12, 2006 Author Report Posted May 12, 2006 That would be awesome to have pictures of where both of them are at. More importantly I need to see where the Crank position sensor is because the car is really starting to act up at times. The only reason I need to know where the throttle postion sensor is, is because I need to be able to tap into it for the nitrous kit. So if you have any pictures showing where the crank position sensor is located, that would be awesome. If you cant find anyone to host them then please email them to me at danekorinko69@hotmail.com Thanks.... Quote

dkorinko Posted May 12, 2006 Author Report Posted May 12, 2006 Haha yeah do that! Cuz I REALLY need to fix this thing Quote
99RegalGS Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Sweet, I didn't know I could do that. I remembered my password for my ftp so it doesn't really matter though, but I'll remember it for next time. I didn't get the picture of the CKP. It was raining and could out, and I didn't really feel like rolling around on the ground to get a good picture. I'll see how tomorrow goes. Anyway, here's a picture of the TPS. TPS Quote
dkorinko Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 Both the pics are greatly appreciated. I have the new crank position sensor in hand, so I am just waiting for the image. Thanks again! Quote
dkorinko Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Posted May 15, 2006 Anyone have the pic yet? I really need to replace this bad boy. Quote
sl3196 Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor RH side of engine at end of crankshaft, behind harmonic balancer Edit: #8 Quote
dkorinko Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Posted May 15, 2006 Thank you very much, I am going to give it a shot today, looks like it should be plenty of fun lol! Quote
dkorinko Posted May 15, 2006 Author Report Posted May 15, 2006 Ok, attempt number one= failure. The two bolts that are holding the senor on dont have a nut at the end of them, there is no way to get ahold of the thing with a socket because it is rounded, how are you supposed to remove the old sensor??? Please help.... Quote
99RegalGS Posted May 17, 2006 Report Posted May 17, 2006 Sorry about having no pics, it's been wet for the past week. lol Anyway, Here's how to replace the sensor. 1. Turn OFF the Ignition. 2. Remove the serpentine belt(s) from the crankshaft pulley. 3. Raise the vehicle. 4. Remove the right front wheel and tire assembly. 5. Remove the right inner fender access cover. 6. Hold the flywheel with a Flywheel Holding Tool. 7. Using 28 mm socket, remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt. 8. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer using a harmonic balancer puller. 9. Remove the crankshaft position sensor shield (1) (Do Not use a pry bar). 10. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector. 11. Remove the attaching bolts from the crankshaft position sensor. 12. Remove the crankshaft position sensor from block face. Quote
dkorinko Posted May 17, 2006 Author Report Posted May 17, 2006 Damn...well I wish I would have known this before...I dont have that many tools so it looks like I am going to have to take this thing somewhere. Quote
99RegalGS Posted May 18, 2006 Report Posted May 18, 2006 You can borrow a harmonic balancer puller from most any parts stores. As far as the engine holding tool, if you have an impact gun that'll pull the harmonic balancer bolt out in most cases with no problem. If not you can get creative on how to get the harmonic balancer bolt out. I had to do this with my old Regal. I ended up putting a socket on a breaker bar and set the breaker bar on the engine cradle. Then after I disabled the fuel and spark I bumped the starter. Worked like a charm. Quote
