z34_nut
Ok, so I'm driving home from a friends house tonight (or last night for most of the people reading this) and I noticed that 3rd gear has been kinda funky. For example. Shifting causually 1-2-3 in that order the gear seems fine, how-ever when I downshift from 5th 3rd grinds, no matter what speed. I experimented 3 times. Test 1: Downshifting into 3rd at about 45 from 5th, grinds Test 2: Downshifting into 3rd at about 40 from 4th, no grind Test 3: Downshifting into 3rd from about 1200RPM from 5th, can feel the gear, but no grind. mmm... Not sure whats going on, but I'm going to try and break it down tomorrow. I don't think its the worst situation (blown tranny) but even if it is, I have access to a lift and an excellent tranny rebuild friend... The only problem that we have, he doesn't know too much about the 284's...And neither do I. From my last tranny experience, I learned a bunch about that 4t60e when I had to rebuild it, but this is a totally different tranny..soo yeah. I heard that you need GETRAG to rebuild it for you, but I assume all you need are the parts from GETRAG, correct? I mean having to send it to GETRAG would be total bullshit. 3carz34
I don't know that much about the 284, but it sounds like maybe the 3rd gear synchro is starting to go. As for parts,and/or rebuilding you will have to do some serious investigation, because originally ,yes, the 284 had to go back to Getrag for any work, some great deal they worked out with GM. I thought I read ,probably on 60deg., that Getrag had suspended this program altogether,so parts may be a big problem aside from finding someone with a 284 laying around. This is the biggest issue preventing me from doing a 5-speed swap. Hopefully whatever you need is still available. 19Cutlass94
You could always get parts from some one on here who found a 284 in a j/y. I know theres a couple still in cars in the j/y's around here, but like mentioned, just do a little homework on what it needs.
slick
He just called me wanting 5speedz34's #. I think he's going to pick up another 284 for now, just so it will go, and then rebuild another on the side.
19Cutlass94
Theres a couple around here that I could help him out with, but the shipping charges would cost you your first born.
digitaloutsider
I didn't think anyone made rebuild parts for the 284..
z34_nut
Well I made a few calls, did some thinking... This week me and my buddy are gonna drain the fluid, flush it, and put syncro mesh in it. Hopefully that will help, but I think I have access to another 3rd gear syncro. My buddy works on trannies all day, and I hope we can disassemble it and just put the new syncro in if it comes down to it.
5speedz34
Contact person for Chevreolet customers: Michael Hinzel Email: michael.hinzel@getrag.de Email him, he does customer relations for transmissions. Also what do you mean by a trans flush, never heard of one for a manual tranny. That's about 10 miles from here.[br]Posted on: May 08, 2006, 02:31:42 AM_________________________________________________IF that doesn't work... z34_nut
well essentually the idea is to run fluid through it to rid the tranny of any metal particals caused by the bad syncro. Thanks a bunch for the info, I'll send them some questions tomorrow at work.

Thanks a bunch for the info, I'll send them some questions tomorrow at work. The thing is that building which is by me is the engineering center. It is the only Getrag building I know of in MI, and it is the only one listed on their site. Everyone seems to say these transmissions get sent to Detroit. I'm going to give them a call tommorow and see what I can do. Does anyone know anybody who works at a dealer and get more information about the swap? SigEpCutlass
Your car is not allowed to have anything go bad. Hopefully everything will go as planned and you'll be back 100%.

z34_nut
just quit down shifting from fifth into third. I forgot to mention I was double clutching that night. from other gears. 3rd gear syncro is completely toast.
Bake82
just quit down shifting from fifth into third. I forgot to mention I was double clutching that night. from other gears. 3rd gear syncro is completely toast. How is the third gear syncro COMPLETELY toast if you can upshift without it grinding? You stated that going up through the gears its fine.....aswell as when you downshift from 4th to 3rd is fine........your transmission seems fine to me if you are driving it like you should be....... z34_nut
make sure you read my point. I was double clutching. W/o double clutching the gear grinds from any direction, and thus, the syncro is totally gone. You should not have to double clutch in order to put the vehical into gear, as I never have prior to this incedent. P.S. Does any-one know the EXACT location of the fill plug for the tranny? z34_nut
Thanks a bunch Jeremy, but I decided to call Tony because my hands were greasy when I typped that last TTT. Good effort tho, And let me tell you, it is located in a SHITTY place...lol good thing I had a friend helping who has some really tiny ass hands. So an update: Syncromesh didn't work. Looks like I'm going to be double clutching untill I can get a new syncro. It did help at the lower speeds, but 40mph+ its no good...oh well. Looks like I fanially have some-thing to do in this car, I'll be bringing it in the shop on friday to replace my vss (Of course this is AFTERHOURS, I'm not having some one else work on this car for me.) and I will try and gauge the process from there. Luckly my good friend Garrett knows his shit about tranny's, access to a lift, and a HUGE box of tranny tools...
z34_nut
i think I'm just going to send it in... its not that much money to yank it out yourself, and send it to a dealership to get a new one... about 500 after sending the core. White93z34
thats really a decent price considering you'll get essentially a brand new trans.
99RegalGS
I remember when I got the Cutlass I got a bunch of stuff about the Trans replacement. It cost the guy $3k just for the trans. If you can get it for cheaper that's great!
