Scary moment with the new block

i was driving down the road, and went to get on it to pass someone (not a full punch, just slowly getting into it), and right when it commanded the shift, my gauges went crazy (doing full sweeps, from one end to the other) then it died.

tried starting it for like 10 minutes, wouldnt go, so i pulled the battery for a bit, plugged it in, and started right up then i slowly rev'd and around 2200 or so, it started chugging, like a misfire, so i promptly let off. let it idle for a bit, shut it off, looked at a plug (burned my hand on the hot ass headers), grandfather and uncle came, and it started up again, and didnt chug when you rev'd it

At first, i thought something totally bad happened, all i could think of was 'its only been 3 days!'. Then i was thinking maybe it was a bad ground, because of the way the gauges were sweeping back and forth, which was temporarly fixed by disconnecting/reconnecting the negative cable (i do remember not totally tightening that down in ohio )

Then a bad ground was kind of thrown out the window when it started to chug when i slowly rev'd it in park, but after a couple minutes, it stopped doing that too. And when it first died, I cranked it for a bit, but never smelled any fuel at all. Something similar happened a couple weeks ago (didnt die, just wouldnt start) and everytime i cranked, i could smell the fuel, so this kinda made it seem like my injectors werent firing or my pump wasnt working, so i listened for the pump, and i could hear that kick off too!

Im completly lost for now, but I am going to see about getting another fuel pump, since this is the stocker, which currently has 123,000 miles on it. If you guys have any other ideas, please let me know, and if you know where a couple grounding points i can check are, lemme know too

Thanks a bunch,

John

Id check the fuel filter as well. Make sure you dont have any corrosion on the battery cables ( under the plastic ) Id try to help with the grounding, but not exactly sure where everything grounds on your car, so Ill leave that to someone who knows for sure.

wow...that sucks john...hope its nothing serious...i would start by checking all the connections to make sure you got everything plugged in all the way...just be thankful this didnt happen on your all-night drive home from ohio!

Werd on checking all the connections. The fuel pump makes sense on the chugging, and I would replace it anyways, especially since you don't have to drop the tank, like on the first gens.

Otherwise probably a loose wire/plug/connection. The gauges going nuts is wierd though!

As if you needed something else to worry about?!? I'd check/replace the fuel filter, and then check the battery cables for corrosion.

Check your crank position sensor wires. My car did that gauge sweep thing when I found that my CPS wiring had fallen against the exhaust manifolds and melted the wiring.

I was also able to wait and start it after awhile, and even drive it. Make sure no wiring is up against the headers. :thumb:

Ok, so now the cars acting weird, but some new things have turned up

1: it stalls while going down hills. Has to be at least 1/3 mile not touch the gas, then the rpms dip, come back, then goto zero. in the meantime, i dont hear the engine racing (when the RPMs go back up) or anything, its a very quiet die.

2: If the engine is under some load (EG: going uphill in overdrive) it tends to buck every once in a while. Dont know if it does it more then 2 or 3 times, since I usually let off the gas to get it out of gear.

3: When taking off, it bucks around 3200 RPMs, whether there is any major load on the engine (i tested this by going slowly on a flat surface in 1st gear, at about 3200 rpms, it was bucking).

I am not to sure what is going on here. This all started on saturday (it appears). The car was perfect on the ride home on Wed-Thurs.

Any clues?

I had some problems w/ my old Honda, gauges went wild, car wouldn't start, and it stalled on my due to a bad battery cable

If i were out there I'd be in that engine bay checking every connection possible

welp, its up and running

the rain finally decided to slow down for a bit, so the second i got home from work, i started tearing into the fucker.

ripped off the SC belt, then the coil pack and bracket, and noticed the wire leading down to (i think its the) CKP sensor was loose. so i jiggled it, and sure enuff, the damn thing wasnt even plugged in!!! :willynilly: So i just reached down, looking for the spot to plug it in, pushed it in as hard as i could, tried to take it off, but wouldnt budge. put everything back on (minus the SC belt), brought the TGP over (needed to jump start it) and sure enuff, fired right up :D :D :D

Drove it around town for a little bit, no more then a mile from home (just in case) and its running great. To afraid to totally get on it, but it wasnt chugging at 3grand like it was earlier. i let it idle for like 15 minutes, then 30 minutes, and no codes were thrown, and the idle was nice and smooth. The real test comes tomorrow, going to drive it to work.

wish me luck

John

^^ a very happy dude right now

I'd keep shot gunning parts at it, instead of actually trying to diag the problem. Seriously....a scan tool, voltmeter, and fuel pressure gauge are your best friends. You would of been able to look at the engine data and see the signal dropping out when it started to run like ass. Plus, be able to get DTCs that have set....but not set the SES light yet. The fuel pressure gauge would of proven the fuel pump and fuel filter were okay (both in terms of flow and pressure) right from the get go. The voltmeter would of solved any questions about wiring (harnesses or cables) by doing a simply volt drop check.

Am I the only that is confused by that post?

The first thing everyone said was......replace the fuel pump! Why? No reason....just to do it. Its a complete shotgun of parts at a car....espessically beings all that was wrong was connector that wasn't fully seated. A simple scan tool would of put you a lot closer to the end result, instead of simply guessing at what part it needed. Like I have said before, diag cars over the internet simply off the symptoms doesn't work.
