I was having a misfire problem on cylinder 1 and had to remove the intake to replace the plug wire. Aside form the misfire, everything was running well. When I reinstalled the intake the idle was holding over 2K and I could hear a sound like a hissing or a metal squeel much like the squeelers from disk brakes. I removed the intake thinking maybe a vacuum issue, but found nothing fishy. I removed the rear valve cover to see if there was a lack of oil and my cams getting pissed off, but that looked good too. I also examined under the timing belt cover and investigated near the serp belt and it looks good.

I reinstalled the upper intake and tightened everything well. When I started the car the same situation persisted but the idle was just slightly lower and for a moment did level out to just over 1000, but the sound never went away. When the idle rose again to about 2K I was looking around and noticed smoke coming from the rear of the engine bay and what smelled like burning rubber. The voltage from the MAP is 2.5 and the IAC and TPS are newer. The engine has a little less than 60K on the clock. The EGR is bolted on but has never been connected to the computer for the last 60K miles.

Anybody have any suggestions?[br]Posted on: May 04, 2006, 11:41:32 PM_________________________________________________bizzibump. Anybody have any ideas?[br]Posted on: May 06, 2006, 01:20:00 AM_________________________________________________update on the situation...

The smell and smoke was from the valve cover not being tight enough and oil dripping oon the exhaust manifold. But I allowed the car to run for about 15 seconds before working on it again. I noticed that when I removed the upper manifold there was a cloudy substance in the intake ports of cylinders 1 and 3. When presented with a flame it burned quickly and almost, but not quite completely. I bought some new gaskets and I am going to put it back together once again and see what I find out.

got it back together and no hissing noise now. Must've just been a vac leak. However, now the IAC is allowing too much air in and it is still idleing way too high at about 1700. When I placed my hand over the throttle body it calmed down. How long should it run like this before the computer catches it and adjusts. It is low on coolant still so I didn't run it but 1 or 2 minutes.
