Rocketman Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 Wow, that's really bad! I'm glad to hear you escaped with just minor injuries. Just out of curiosity, how fast do you think you were going during impact? Do you think the airbags were instrumental in preventing more severe head/neck injuries? I'm a bit disappointed to see so much buckling in the roof, but I've seen much worse. I would estimate between 65 and 70 mph and yes the airbags were a life-saver Quote
AWeb80 Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 a cousin of mine had a red 94 GP and she got t-boned in the passenger side at like ~45-50 and she was fine....the car looked horrible....but, i couldn't believe how nothing happened to her.... they are well built cars. Quote

Basically it was a fit of road rage. I was stuck behind a car doing well below the speed limit (35mph), which pisses me off, so when they pulled off into another road I gunned it. I remember seeing 78 or 80 on the cluster before I started braking for an upcoming turn. I knew the road but I was kind of disoriented and didnt realize that the turn was also a sharp hill. As I said I was braking into the turn but the front end bounced up over the hill/turn and I just didnt have any traction. I realized right away I was fucked so I just slammed on the brakes. The skid marks were only 20-25 feet long so I didnt have much room before hitting the tree, hence my estimate. My ABS light had been coming on intermittently but I cant remember if it was on or not at the time. So yes I was being completely stupid and doing an insane speed. No need to bitch at me about it because I've already heard enough and learned my lesson. I also gotta be more patient with people... I was impressed with how well the car held up in the impact. My 20lb toolbox pretty much flew from the trunk thru the back seat (pushed it out real far), and other than the airbags, the interior looked fine. It is a very well built car. I still can't believe we both just walked away from it. I know I will be getting a citation for it, but what I dont know yet. Could be careless or reckless driving. I'll find out soon enough. On another note, I picked up an '87 Buick Century today from a neighbor for free. Its a complete shitbox but with a little TLC and Bondo it will be a decent temporary ride untill I can get my Capri on the road. Its got the 4banger in it. Any idea what size it is? Yay for bench seats. I still have to battle with the insurance company about the hospital visit and some other crap. Wish me luck. -Rocketman Quote
94CutlassXtreme Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 Damn dude I really sorry about your loss and glad to hear you're alright. There W's are damn tanks! Quote
birdman Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 they'll probobly get you for failure to control, it happened to me when the brakes went out and i hit someone. so i feel ya on that type of shit. good luck with gettin a good car goin. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 When I was flyin' around a corner on a wet day my ABS came on. When they work they work pretty good, however stupid things like that or if the battery connection isn't tight, etc. sometimes the car shuts it off The mini-quads probably didn't help either since you could have seen the turn coming up closer (maybe ) I hate driving at night anyways, I'm always extra careful. White93z34 Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 WOW, thats prety intense. if the state troopers get you for "careless driving" fight it, its is a 3 points offense in PA. but above all you and your friend are alright, the car did what it was supposed to in a wreck and i think thats prety damn good for a 65ish mph colision. i thought my car was wrecked prety bad. around here it seems things hapen to certin cars at once, when i wrecked my lumina, i think 2 or 3 other people wrecked their luminas shortly after. now the red B4U grand prix. where in PA are you, if you want any help parting it out or whatever, and if your nearby, i'd be glad to come out. and i may be intrested in some parts myself. brianhasadd Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Dude that sucks but I'm glad to hear that y'all are both ok!!!! Quote
Ned Flanders Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Gaw! Glad you're okay. That sucks. Part it out, take the money and run! Quote
Rocketman Posted May 7, 2006 Author Report Posted May 7, 2006 I'm in Marshalls Creek, however I have enough cars to work on and a shed full of parts from another car I parted out. I just signed the title over to the tow company, he said it would make its way to the boneyard. If you guys want I'll find out where its headed. The interrior is in great shape, the cluster has 170k on it, pretty much the rear-end is good. You could even salvage the brake pads of, not even 1k on em. rotors were in decent shape too. Front brakes had less than 700 miles. and the pass. side lowbeam I replaced the night before Quote
z34_nut Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Shit, glad your okay... yup, its the w-body, reck-athon...happens once a yeah, I laready paid my debt once, I hope I don't go through it again. Quote
EviLette Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Pictures like that make me cry... im so scared im gonna wreck mine, but at least I know I'll be in safe hands... lol... that was one of the reasons I went after the GP... awesome safety ratings... so glad to hear you're okay. The next w you get will be even better. Quote
GnatGoSplat Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 that was one of the reasons I went after the GP... awesome safety ratings... so glad to hear you're okay. Where'd you find awesome safety ratings? NHTSA ratings for airbag-equipped gen 1's is mediocre at best, for the non-airbag ones is downright frightening. This post has just about scared me into wanting to install at least a driver's side airbag into mine! Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I would not want to be caught in an accident in one of these cars with no airbag. Quote
fastbird232 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Yeah, I've seen the NHTSA crash test videos. They don't give you a warm, safe feeling. Quote
White93z34 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 eh, i feel perfectly safe in my car. i survived one wreck just fine in it. but anyhow, your clear on the other side of PA, not worth it for me to make a run for a few croslace rims. Quote
ShockTherapy Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I call the HUD for ShockTherapy... lol, that's funny. but the rest of the car isint. good to hear you're okay. Quote

I was hit in the passenger corner in my first '92 Z34 at about 35-40 and I was fine. I sprayed my wrist a little bit I think, but it was no biggie. Quote
fastbird232 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I thought we were talking about 70 mph head-on collisions. Quote
Crimson Fury Z Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 87 century, if its like my friend's ex-87 century, 2.5 4-Tech! Quote
