red93z34 Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 On my 89 cutty with auto tranny, runs for about 40 mins and then just shuts off and won't start back up until it cools down a little. We put a new computer in it because the only code it was spitting was invalid computer, replaced fuel pump, ignition module, and still does the same thing. Someone told me its the crank sensor, does anyone know where thats located and is it a difficult thing to fix? Quote
red93z34 Posted April 11, 2003 Author Report Posted April 11, 2003 oh by the way it has the 3.1 engine in it. Quote
Robby1870 Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 crank sensor is on the rear of the engine on the block. On some, its a circular thing, and on others it looks like an actual sensor, just take out the old sensor, put new one in. They screw into the block, its very easy, but hard to get to. However, your problem doesnt sound like a crank sensor. Sounds like a MAP sensor or maybe O2 sensor is messin up. The MAP only begins to work around a engine temp of 170-175*. So, thats why it'll start cold, then die, then wont restart. Same thing for O2. Check your codes again. If nothing shows, check your vacuum line on the MAP for cracks. Then replace the O2, it prolly needs it anyway. Robby Quote
red93z34 Posted April 11, 2003 Author Report Posted April 11, 2003 I'll check those out, the car has 137,000 miles on it and the only engine part that has been replaced is the waterpump and computer, it still has all original belts and original timing, amazing huh? Quote
Robby1870 Posted April 11, 2003 Report Posted April 11, 2003 yeah that is amazing, especially for a DOHC Robby Quote
Toxie Posted April 12, 2003 Report Posted April 12, 2003 if the crank sensor goes bad the engine will not fire at all. if you do decide to take it out and replace be VERY careful! they get old and brittle. I would take out the alternator and reach down under the exhaust manifold and slowly twist it out, do not pry. these can break off and then you are in a world of hurt, believe me, I have just been there... I had to pull the oil pan to get the old crank sensor out. Quote
