runt
Alright. I konw how to wire shit up and pretty much have a good idea what I'm looking at. I guess what I need to know, right now I just have my Pioneer DEH-P6600 HU in the car. Stock speakers all around. I plan on adding a sub hopefully later this summer (one 12 would be great for me...) but do you think I should go with a 2-way, 3-way or 4-way speaker? I had 3-ways in the Cutty with the Pioneer and other component Pioneers in the doors, and it sounded good to my ears, even up pretty loud. I guess i'm looking on more thoughts than outright suggestions for speakers b/c I'm pretty set on buying Pioneer's. I'm not into competitions or anything like that, it's more for a bit clearer sound and hopefully sound better turned up (the stockers suck for that). Suggestions? (yes, I'm even open to other brands if you must feel the need...lol) Jeremy
SigEpCutlass
Buy 3 or 4 way speakers Jeremy. You'll be disappointed if you buy 2 ways after what you had before.
ExZion
Blaupunkt PCxb693 thats what i have in my cutty i am extremely impressed with them. for 60 bucks you cant go wrong IMO. There are a few downsides though with out an amp they just are not loud and they wouldnt fit under my stock speaker covers so i made custom covers. 19Cutlass94
3 way. No questions asked. Of course you know what Im gonna say. I love these Infinity speakers. A little expensive yes, but the sound quality is well worth it.
ToroToro
I just put Pioneer 4 way 6X9s in my Cutlass. Sound pretty clean, and play loud for how cheap they were. Much better than the factory dual voice coil speakers, and I thought they were pretty good.
THe_DeTAiL3R
I have Infinity reference 9602i (2-way). They sound great.. the 3-way sound a *bit* nicer, but I wasn't gonna bother paying more $$$ just for rear speakers. They are just filler anyways, since my front components sound really nice, so to me it doesn't really matter. Just get front speakers that match the rears (ie same brand or series) and you'll be all good.
runt
Excellent guys. Appreciate the help! I think I'm gonna get some nice 3-ways....probably Pioneer though...haha
Puggsley456
IMO......6x9's are highly overrated. I cant stand them! Maybe thats cause I've blown 2 sets without even using them that much. If I were you I would probably save my money and get a nice set of 6.5" components. Once you have those in your front doors, Rear speakers wont even be a concern. I ended up removing them all together.
Garrett Powered
hardly miss my old kenwoods I ran temporarily for the 3 way setup. the bostons get me by for a few days until I put these new Vifa tweeters in.

The best way to explain it is that when your at a concert, you don't stand with your back to the stage do you? Then, why have the better speakers in the rear? Also, not many people know this, but you only hear in Mono behind your ears. Any sound that your hear from the front and sides is in Stereo. Many many many people that do SQ systems do not have rear speakers. And, if they do, it is usually just woofers. So, again, why have the better speakers in the rear? Garrett Powered
well you can only get so much sound out of the front without modifying the stock look. Besides I was running front speakers only and the back seemed kinda empty sounding.

Puggsley456
I didnt have to modify mine very much. The doors are already framed fo 5.25's. Its just the door panel had to be cut out.

What's wrong with them? They put out just as much and as good BASS as 3-ways, I just wanted all the midrance and treble to come from the front anyways... runt
Well fuck you guys I'm going home...oh wait...lol Soon enough fronts will come. I need to rip the door panels off of this car and see how easy/hard it would be to put better stuff up front. Until then...off on my quest to find some 6x9's....lol
THe_DeTAiL3R
Well ultimatly the best thing to do is to go to an audio store like Best Buy where they have a nice display so you can go and LISTEN to the ones you might wanna buy..... Thats funny! Like my small azz town (area) is gonna have stuff like that. The closest I've got to that is Walmart and Sears. Maybe road trip time...yeah... GnatGoSplat
Oval speakers don't reproduce sound as accurately as round ones, that's why you don't see oval speakers in speakers for the home. The only reason oval speakers are ever used is because it's a cheap way to get a larger cone surface area into a small space. Since you're getting subs anyway, I'd recommend getting a piece of MDF and making a 6x9-shaped adapter plate to fit an inexpensive 6.5" component setup or even 6.5" coax speakers. Good 2-way speakers reproduce sound better than many 3-ways. That's why majority of component speakers are just 2-ways. Also, 4-way speakers are usually cheap and crappy, they exist only to satisfy those who think "more is better", completely a marketing gimmick. I had a set of 4-way Pioneers once, and one of the tweeters was a piezo element... if you don't know what that is, it's the same kind of "speaker" you'd find in a cheap digital watch.
