90Luminator Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 W-body forum, A while back I started a post on getting rid of my spark knock and a good point was brought up that an extensive amount of carbon build up on my pistons might be the culprit (thus raising my compression ratio thus causing the knock and pre TDC detonation). So I was curious what are the methods used in remedying this problem. It would be great if I could get options and maybe even some prices. Thanks again W-Body! -Andy Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 This is a shot in the dark, but what if you were to use a concentrated engine cleaner to run through your engine. Maybe that would get rid of the buildup inside your engine on the pistons and other areas? That would definately be a very inexpensive solution. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 You could try an engine cleaner, like seafoam or something to just simply clean it out. Could also be that your timing is off. Id look at the timing first though... Quote
90Luminator Posted April 19, 2006 Author Report Posted April 19, 2006 I'm not too sure if it's my timing. I just got my computer reset at the local dealership. It's weird that every time I do some kind of major work my computer always messes up and has to be reprogramed. So that engine cleaner is called seafoam? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 Well GM calls it something like "top end cleaner" or something of the sort, but seafoam is basically does the same thing. Quote
White93z34 Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 yep, pick it up at any autoparts store. its prety nice stuff, made my old mans ratty camaro run not as bad. Quote
skiiirt Posted April 19, 2006 Report Posted April 19, 2006 GM Top Engine Cleaner # 1050002 or Kleens # 992872 Same thing Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted April 21, 2006 Report Posted April 21, 2006 I always use water ... as strange as that sounds. pull a vacuum line, start the engine, and with it runnin' at about 2k, slowly allow water to get sucked into the vacuum line - the water expands in the cylinders way more then any cleaner, plus the water will break up all that old carbon ... you'd be amazed at how well it actually works. --Dave.
