In 1994, the 3100 is a evolution of the 3,1L!!!

In fact, you all right, the first generation of the 3100 is in 1994, but is a evolution of 3,1L with 20Hp of more!

Here are your main differences, and 3.1L is a Gen II motor, cuz of the aluminum heads. Gen I 3.1Ls that they used in 80s trucks had iron heads. So, 3100s are Gen III

Compression: 3.1L is 8.9:1, 3100 is 9.5:1

Heads: 3.1L heads are aluminum so are 3100 heads, but the 3100 heads flow much better do to shape of ports.

Fuel System: 3.1L uses Multiport injection, one injector per cylinder injected in the lower intake manifold, 3100 used Sequential Port injection which is very similar to Multi port, except the firing of the injector is synchronized with the opening of the intake valve.

Air sensors: 3.1L were MAT/IAT equipped, 3100s are MAF equipped.

Intake manifold design is different too.

3100s all came with 4T60E transmissions and 3.1Ls had 4T60s.

3100 has 160HP@5200 and 185 lb-ft@4000

3.1L has 140HP@4800 and 180 lb-ft@3600

Wait a minute! My 94 Lumina Euro had a 3.1L MPFI with a 4T60-E tranny!

Aaron

Yeah I forgot about that Luminas using the 3.1L in 94. Redturbo, I was thinking 3.4 DOHC for the MAFs, thats my bad. If any of that stuff is wrong, Im sorry, I saw the post at 2:15am, and thought I would add my 2 cents

There are more differences right ? Don't the 3100's have roller lifters/cam ? What else ? BTW, I just bought my wife the most powerful production N/A version of this engine. Its a "3400" with 185 hp and

210 tq. Its in the Buick Rendezvous. I haven't driven it much yet but I have noticed I generally outrun everybody and it cruises at 70 mph @ 2000 rpms ! It downshifts a lot to stay in its best power range, but it does it well. It still gets 26 mpg highway and 19 city. I have to get rid of 1 w-body though so its the wifes 98 Regal, not the TGP.

Don't forget the different D shaped exhaust manifold ports, roller cam/lifters, and the later models (97+?) have roller rockers. 2000+ 3100 and 96+ 3400 have a slightly larger intake valve in the heads, and the intake manifold ports are MUCH bigger, which is most likely the reason for the jump in power from 160-175 in the 3100

Also the 4T60E was used in all '93's, 3.1 OR 3.4TDC , not sure if this holds true to the Lumina.

yeah I think your right Brian, 97+ had roller rockers. I remembered the cam differences this morning when I woke up but didnt post them. Yeah the 3.1L head has circular exhasut ports and 3100/3400 has D-shaped. 3400 heads flow the best out of the 3. BTW, my 3.1L will run 2000rpms @70mph also. And, yes, I think the 4T60E was standard in 93.

about the 3400 heads, the 2000+ 3100 got the same ones. So the 3400 had a 4 year head start

I was robbed. I just read that the 2004 Rendezvous will have the folling engine: The Ultra uses the 2004 3.6L V-6 VVT (Variable Valve Timing) engine, the first iteration of GM’s new V-6 engine family to go into production for possible global applications. First announced on the Cadillac CTS, the engine generates 245 hp (preliminary), 65 more than the original Rendezvous.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :x

Adopting fully variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust valves – a first for a GM vehicle. Anyway, the Rendezvous is for family time. I can always fly in my TGP or burn rubber in my Elky 350-4, duals,1.6 rockers, k&N w/dual snorkle.

There are probably a few minor differences somewhere, I want to say something like the later engine will have an extra cam/crank sensor (can't remember at this point), but it shouldn't be an issue. What isn't the same, you can just move over from the old engine.

This is correct.  My 94CS had a 3100 that came apart thanks to shoddy work by a mechanic.  I had access to a low mile (sub 10k mile) 3100 out of an 01 Lumina IIRC.  I had it gone through and put in.  It worked just fine.  When comparing my original motor was not roller rocker and the 01 was.
