stockgp
can it be done? i'm pretty sure the alt on my mom's 95 lumina is going bad. we're not going to have a day off together for some time and i don't want her to be stranded somewhere. can i take the alt off my 93 and slap it on temporarily? 89GP_SE
Just make sure the alt for the 3.1 and the alt from the 3100 have the same plug. Also make sure that the 3.1 and 3100 have the same bolt pattern for the alts as well. If its the same on both then it can be done. All alternators are the same, just different housings in the end. stockgp
i'm trying to find this stuff out so i can hurry up and swap them in the morning on my way by my parent's house and be on my way, you know?
Psych0matt
(Hey stock, check your pms! ) oh, and what he said above is correct. If it can physically mount, and has the right plug, go for it. It should, if i remember right
stockgp
fyi, the alts won't swap. the rear bolt mount on the 3100 alt has two prongs that mount on the outside of thebracket. the 3.1 alt is the opposite

DiscoStudd
Well I would venture a guess that the mounting brackets are different as well. My old 94 Grand Am had the 3100 with the older "CS-130" style alternator, so it is possible to physically bolt one of those alts to a 3100. Maybe the mounting tabs for the 3.1's alt weren't the same as the one used on the early 3100
94CutlassSLCoupe
My car is an early 1994 (10/93 build date) model and its equipped with the CS-130D alternator as all 3100's not installed in N/L bodies are. Just find the $$ and get a new one if its dying.
