Today on my way to school my RPM guage completely lost it. Initially it dropped to 0 and stayed there, about 2 seconds later it started to go ballistic. Jumping up and down from 0 to 4000 and back. I took a quick video clip of it

Now the engine was not revving nor did I experience any stalling or anything, normal operation while this was happenin

The weather conditions were pretty warm, very humid and rainy. I have a sneaky suspicion this is the cause.

However on my way home i heard a ticking, pulled over to find that the spark plug wire was being chewed up by the fan. It looks like this now

My questions:

  • Could the spark plug wire cause the RPM Guage to do this?
  • Should I replace that wire? I dont see any metal but I know it will now wear quicker seeing as it is now gaping
  • Could the humidity have caused this problem? If so what sensor would I replace if in fact a sensor is the problem behind this

I dont think a chewed up plug wire would cause the tach to do that. I've had plenty of wires arc in my time, and never has that happened.

Wire dont look too bad, but I'd replace it anyways, or at least tape up the hole.

I would hold off on replacing anything else unless it does it again. Could have been a fluke.

The only thing that wire could do is arc. It might get bad enough you might get a misfire, but thats about it. But Id replace it.

Whats funny is my car has a similar problem. Which it only tends to do when it is wet or rainy outside. I will be just crusing along and the rpm gauge will fall to 0 with no change in how the car is driving. And also when i sit at stop lights it will do the same thing, just fall to zero. About once a week the SES light comes on, I had the code read and sure enough, as i think someone has already said, it was the crank position sensor. Whats weird is the light will come on for a day, and then stay off for another week or so....strange stuff huh!!!???

Definately

I have noticed the same sort of problems. If the temp is -11°C or 11°C (12°F & 51°F) funny things happen to my car. The Volts usually drop below the 13 mark, It doesnt hold a solid charge (step on the gas it goes about 3/4 the guage, when i let off it drops to about half) Things flicker and my car generally runs like ass. But if it's 1° warmer or colder none of these symptoms exits

How long can a CPS be expected to last? I had mine changed approximately 18K miles ago. Not to say it wasnt faulty.

Well it's been about 5 days and I haven't had another problem. I taped the wire back up and everything appears to be fine
