Loki Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 If you feel you were wronged on a speeding ticket, 2 things together will surly get the ticket dropped or at least the fine lessened. First: Call the courthouse and get a court date set for no less than 5 months out. No way the cop will remember the details of the incident! Second: As in the other posts, Have them show proof of calibration on the date of the ticket. Quote
Lee Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 I DID IT BUT I SHOULDN'T GET BUSTED FOR IT BECAUSE I WAS SUPPOSED TO GET AWAY WITH IT!!! Last ticket I got was for a rolling stop. I did it and said so in court but that there were extenuating cercumstances. Too hard to explain but a plain clothed cop in an unmarked car had just pulled out in front of me freaking me out etc. etc. Then pulled me over. The second court date they come out before the Judge and ask what will settle this. I agreed to the fine but no points. Quote
Schurkey Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 You know what annoys me? People who bitch about speeding tickets but admit they were speeding. Grow the fuck up and take responsibility for what you do. Laws will get more respect when they produce more respectable laws. Underposted speed limits are pandemic in this country. "Illegal" does NOT automatically mean "unsafe". That said, you need to be a member of the National Motorists Organization. Members can rent materials--video tapes, books, etc. that will teach you how to make a good presentation in court. You can even get operator's manuals for some of the radar/laser guns. That can help you to ask questions of the officer, to see if the equipment was used properly, and to verify that he has proper training. And when you're done with the materials, send 'em back and get most of your money refunded. http://www.motorists.org Quote
jeremy Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 "Illegal" does NOT automatically mean "unsafe". Whether it is "safe" or not doesn't change whether it is "illegal" or not. Quote
Schurkey Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 "Illegal" does NOT automatically mean "unsafe". Whether it is "safe" or not doesn't change whether it is "illegal" or not. Altogether true. But why give tickets for behavior that isn't unsafe? Could it be because both the government and the insurance industry wants to pick your pocket? The government gets paid for fines and court costs which usually disappear into the "general fund" which is a black hole that money vanishes into. The insurance industry increases your premiums and therefore makes undeserved profits from guilty, although not proven unsafe, policyholders. All in all, it's a scam and a fraud, and although it is sometimes legal and sometimes not, it is a morally bankrupt policy. Speed limits should be set based on traffic engineering data, not by the bitching of "salt of the earth" just plain folks (Remember the movie Blazing Saddles?) who get a hair up thier butt about traffic in their neighborhood, or by corrupt politicians bankrolled by fatcat industry who each see the rewards of extracting the maximum amount of money from the maximum number of people. So yeah, I see no contradiction in people who admit that they were speeding, and also complain about the ticket. The chances that the speed limit is underposted is nearly 100%. And underposting is just plain wrong. Then there is the whole issue of technology used without proper training, or simply misused--Radar/laser/Vascar/etc. Going "ten over" but getting a ticket for "thirty over" is also unjust. The right to freedom of speech, and the right to representative government are inherent in our society. Politicians want to remove the "representative", and others want to remove the right to freedom of speech. No, thanks. I object. Quote
joey b Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 no matter what the speed limit people will drive in excess of it. I don't care if the speed limit seems too slow, there is a reason for that other than to fatten somebody's pockets. Near my house there is a road that has a posted speed limit if 30. It is 1 mile with no stops and houses on both sides. It seems like a very long mile. Most people drive over 40 on that road. Yeah, it seems like it should be raised because it has a rather low traffic volume for 2 lanes each way and not a lot of entering and exiting traffic, but I'm completely content because it is a residential area. What reason do you have to drive in excess that is not your own fault? a raised speed limit would not increase commerce or anything of the sort. If you drive 5 miles an hour faster you will get down the road, what 20 seconds faster for that mile? I have a better solution. Leave for your destination with enough time planned to get there. Quote

I can only speak for myself, and I can say you will never see me get a ticket in a residential area. I agree 100% with Shurkey's posts, but if ya read what he's saying, you'll see he's talking about places where driving at a higher speed is not decreasing safety. In the situation you describe, driving at a higher speed IS decreasing safety. Residential areas, where there are pets and children potentially entering the roadway, is where speeds and laws really need to be enforced. Not 4-lane divided highways, which is where I have most of my difficulties. Hell, I'm a dad too, and my opnion is in residential areas, the speed limit shouldn't be higher than 20-25. Just my $0.02. 96GranSport Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 Well, I just happened to get a speeding ticket last night on my way home from work. Was doing 51 in a 35. The only thing that I can say is I honestly thought it was a 45. It is everywhere else on the street except one area where it drops down to 35 for about 1/2 mile. So, you know what I'll be doing? I'll be paying the friggin ticket. I WAS going over the speed limit...and I'll be taking responsibility for my own actions. Not blaming it on someone else. Too many people aren't willing to man-up and take what's coming to them. On an added note, the cop who stopped me was actually VERY polite about the whole thing and even dropped it down to only 41 in a 35. Much better on the pocket book. Guess I'll be going to traffic school to take care of the points on this one as well. Damn it sucks when you don't pay attention. Quote
89GP_SE Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 IMO...I like to fight speeding tickets just cause most cops are dinks about it. Very rare when I get a nice cop that treats me with respect and like I am a real person. Cops that dont show respect for me or anyone else are dinks. Sometimes I feel that Cops think that we are not people. Well People make mistakes, and I am sure they have in their lives too so why be dinks about it. I have been pulled over 3 times in my entire life. I have only had one ticket and it was from a cop that was a dink. The other two let me off because of certain cicumstances, such as I was the designated driver, or my car was egged and I wanted to get home a lil faster to was it off. I always accept it though. I never get mad at the fact I got a ticket, I just accept that I made a mistake. Quote

brianhasadd Posted April 28, 2006 Report Posted April 28, 2006 I drive at least 10 or more over the speed limit everywhere I go. I guess it's because I have a Valentine 1 radar detector but that's beside the point. I speed everywhere and I won't stop speeding until they take my license away. Call me immature for having that attitude but I don't care....I admit that I speed but I don't drive wrecklessly...I speed but I do it safely. Quote

Would you stop speeding if you hit somebody? or a child? Tickets aren't the risk when you're speeding, it's the people around you. Who cares if you have the best radar detector on this earth? it just keeps you from getting in trouble. There isn't a radar detector on this planet that can detect a kid about to pop out in front of you, much less fix him after your careless self hits him. The immature part isn't that you're going to speed until they take your licensce away, the immature part is that you seem to think tickets are there just to keep you from speeding, when they're really there to protect people. Call me immature for having that attitude but I don't care....I admit that I speed but I don't drive wrecklessly...I speed but I do it safely. Isn't wreckless driving what we all want? Where I live, driving 10 over will get you rear-ended in a hurry on the highway. Seems the lowest they ticket for around here is 12+ over the limit, except in construction and school zones. Once, when I first got some work done on my GTP, I got a ticket on an on-ramp. Got clocked at 125, but the cop loved the car. Wrote me a ticket for 100 in a 55, and somehow, it only cost me $110 and 3 points. That was about 6 years ago, and the last speeding ticket I ever got. Speeding on public roads does not make you a badass. I thought like you until that final speeding ticket. Then, I realized that for the amount I paid for 23 moving violations, 4 reinstatement fees, 2 totaled cars, and an attorney would have been enough to get all the goodies I wanted for the GTP but could never afford. Oh, and if you are speeding (for me it was 83 in a 55 at 9:30am on freakin Superbowl Sunday...and I really was late for church), they can cite you for RECKLESS driving. Around here, they give you a ride in the back of a Crown Vic for that sorta thing... Quote
Monkton Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 Well I've been reading all these posts about speeding in different places etc, and in my defense, where I was, no one but myself would have been hurt. Straight stretch with a swamp on one side and the woods on the other, no residential, nothing like that. Plus I doubt many people would be out around 11pm at night where I was... But I've pretty much learned my lesson, I got passed on the way to school today by one of my schoolmates and normally I would have gunned it as soon as I saw him pull out, but you know what, I didn't. Plus, it's a fucking Cavalier, I don't have to prove anything  But brianhasadd, I can understand doing 60 in a 50 on like an open road or 65 in a 55, but if you're doing 40mph in the middle of a town, that's just plain stupid. EviLette Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 What are points? I've had two tickets, both in my last car... one for 67 in a 55... cop wrote it for 65 so it wouldn't go to insurance... the second one was 36 in a 20... last day of my junior year of high school, had just gotten out of school and was on my way to visit some friends in the city. The school zone signal lights were blocked... there was an 18-wheeler slowing down to stop at the light turning yellow... so I didn't see the lights flashing on that one... went thru the corner on a yellow light... The traffic was all way ahead of me (incidentaly out of the school zone as well, so I couldn't tell I was speeding by everyone else going horribly slow around me) and the school zone sign on the other side of the street (way back, for oncoming traffic entering the school zone) was coincidentally also blocked by traffic. I took pictures and went to court over the ticket, arguing that there were not enough signs. There wasn't one where I turned onto the street (mind you, this is a fairly large intersection, it should've been better marked). When I went before the judge, I found out it was only a "preliminary" hearing. What pissed me off is that I got the ticket on the last day of my junior year, and I missed the first day of my senior year going to court over the damn thing. When I told the judge I was missing school to be there, I guess I must've impressed him or something that i was in school still. I don't know, but it was going to be a pretty hefty ticket, I think it's like double the fine in school zones or something like that... Anyways, he dropped the ticket and only made me pay fifty bucks court costs... my first ticket was only 90... I've been pulled over twice in my Prix... both times she was VERY clean and VERY presentable... or I'd have been fucked... the first time I got pulled over it was stupid shit... i was showing off for my friend in the car... back when she'd actually smoke off the tires... and turned a corner without signaling, laying rubber, right in front of a city cop from a city of notoriously dickly cops. Then got bitched at for not wearing a seat belt... but got off with a warning. ?? My second time pulled over was like... maybe 52 in a 45... I'm not sure... I gave the Sheriff a story about how me and my man had just made up and this and that... told him i was wearin my seatbelt but had to take it off to get into my glove box (I actually was wearing it..) he told me to have a good night, I was old enough to make up my own mind on whether or not I wear my seat belt, and that he would remember my car if he saw me speeding again, and he'd nail me if he did. He told me he was letting me off because my record was clean, only one wreck and it was in February of 04... (not my fault!) Tickets suck... just think every time your speeding of how much that speedo equals out to in frostys or crispy nuggets or dollars lol... I do. Sometimes it makes me slow down. Can you afford it?
