i bought my gp 4 weeks ago and a week after i started driving it third gear went out in my transmission. I want to know if it is possible for me to fix it myself or what other transmissions will work with it.

how did 3rd gear go out? You usually dont hear of 3rd going out. 4th is usually the gear that goes out, cuz its really weak. Can you tell me the symptoms that you are/was experiencing. It may not be the gear itself. And, unless you know alot about the 4T60, you aren't going to be able to do it yourself. What motor?

if i had it in drive or overdrive it would go from first to second and when it got to 3rd gear the engines rpms would shoot up and i wouldnt have any acceleration.

its a 3.1 engine

okay, its slipping. Check your fluid, for color, and level. If the fluid is not red, (e.g. very light pink or brown) it needs to be changed. Also, smell the fluid, if it smells burnt, it needs changing. Always check you fluid when you have a tranny problem. Let me know how the fluid looks

i dropped the transmission pan and changed the filter and the fluid. the fluid was brown and smelled burned. also there were metal shavings at the bottom of the pan.

Did you see the magnet on the pan? It collects all those metal shavings that come off the cluthes from shifting. You should have cleaned that magnet off. It was full and thats why there were metal shavings. Were the metal shavings big, or just shavings? Sounds like, with a fluid and filter change, it should run fine, since your fluid was burnt. Lemme know on that magnet, and how it runs now

i changed the fluid and filter and cleaned the whole pan. the tranny on it was kind of funny though. The filter that was supposed to go on it didnt fit so i brought the filter to the store where i got it and matched it. the filter that replaced it was out of a 3.4 DOHC gp. The people that sold it to me said they had the transmission rebuilt last year but we think that the person who supposedly rebuilt it just went to the junkyard and pulled the tranny out of a 3.4 gp. we told the people that and they were supposed to get the money back that they spent on that tranny but i havnt heard from them. i just remembered that when i was thinking about replacing the filter.

yeah the tranny out of a DOHC was the 4T60E and the one with a 3.1L was 4T60. Not much difference, but some internal stuff, so thats why the filter was different. So, how does the tranny feel now? Im sure its trying to remember the last time it had clean fluid in in. But, if that tranny came from a DOHC equipped car, it has been through a lot already. The DOHC revs to 7K rpms, and has like 210+HP, both of which are hard on it. So, baby that thing for a while. Change the fluid a lot more often than suggested. Just be nice to it for while.

It sounds like what he's saying is the people that owned the car before he bought it about a month ago had the tranny put in. thats why he's calling it new.

It is possible the tranny shop started with that 4T60E as a core and rebuilt it either ahead of time or to go in your car. If it is just some guy they paid to throw in a tranny then what you most likely have is a used salvage yard tranny. And from the sound of your problems that trans is on its way out and cannot be depended on.

That would make sense, and yes if it came from a junkyard and was on a DOHC car, you might as well junk it
