Curently have a quad 4 5 spped in my 90 cutlass. wanted to know would it be possible just to drop in a 3.1 or 2.8 and bolt it straight up to the trans. I figure a little ab work would be needed and id have to change ecus. but the cost for a nice quad 4 is crazy. figure i could swap in the .31 or 2.8 and save mney for a nice rebuilt quad 4. just checking.

Isn't just the head gasket bad on your Q4? That doesn't mean you would need a rebuilt engine.

Doing the head gasket is much less work than swapping engines. And going from an HO Q4 to a 3.1 or a 2.8 seems like a serious downgrade, at least from a performance/fun to drive standpoint....

bellhousing different. motor mounts different. wiring harness different. ECM different. heater lines different. you're looking at a buttload of money, you're better off selling it and getting a v6 car if you want one. i'd fix the Q4.

i wouldnt mind fixing the q4 but i can't get anyone to help me.. they say its a major pita and dont wanna do it. and i realy dont feel like paying the money for a mechanic to do it. i can pick up a decent 3.1 ffor 150 bucks and was hoping it would just drop in.. guess that idea is shot
