94Ragtop
I went to buy some spark plugs for the 1996 Lumina LS and the 1994 Cutlass Supreme today and found two different part numbers. They are both 3100 M engines. The 1996 CHEVY took AC 14 or Autolite ASP606 and the 1994 OLDS took AC 6 or Autolite R44LTSM6. Does any one know what caused the change or what the difference is. I looked for a chart on spark plugs but couldn't find one. Will these cars be interchangeable for parts or electronics, if I decide to part one out? Thanks, Mike
ToroToro
'94s and '96s use the same plugs. Rapidfire #6s/ R44LTSM6. Someone must have made a boo boo at the parts store. I dont think I have ever even heard of Rapidfire #14s. Compatability is hit and miss. A lot of things are different with the '96 since it's OBD 2. Mechanical parts can be transferred over fine. I pray to god you dont use the CS for parts though. That's just not right.
cutlassdude96
in 96 they started using the platium plugs and ac 14 is correct for the 96 3100
94Ragtop
I was thinking of driving the Lumina for a while and possibly keeping it as a donor car for the Cutlass (the two passanger doors on the Lumina are pushed in pretty good). I also noticed the Dex-cool is required in the 1996. Any particular reasons? I have to look into what differences are in ODB 2, I was hoping to get some electrical parts for troubleshooting in the future. The previous owner stated getting 29MPG, this is better than the CS so it must be in the computer sys.
pitzel
41-805 I believe is the part number on the platinum plugs, ACDelco. Good for at least 100k miles without changing. Beware though, they do not come cheap at all (~$8/plug if I recall).
94Ragtop
Thanks, The previous owner of the Lumina installed autolite 605 copper plugs and only did the three front. Is it neccesary to run the platinum plugs? If so I will get some. The car is running rough at idle and to start off and blinking the engine service light, then runs smoother with less accelerator pedal applied( as you let up on it and hold it partway down). I was going to replace all of the plugs with the propper ones and then try the eng. code proceedure on the web site.
chadz34
in 96 they started using the platium plugs and ac 14 is correct for the 96 3100 Yep, I just about shat when the parts store told me I needed platinum plugs for my 96' DOHC. I told him they eat them, he said Um, says here the car came with platinums blah blah.
19Cutlass94
For most GM's from about '96, '97 and up we dont even list basic copper plug, because they came standard with platinums. That are yes, quite expensive sometimes.
ToroToro
Hmm...didn't know they went platinum that early... I think the Rapidfire platinums are a bit cheaper than the long life ones. But obviously they wont last as long. And Dex Cool is supposedly a better coolant, but every car that I've had with it, I flushed the shit out and put the green in there. Even the dealer did that to my Aurora.
88GPSE
the 100k is not a good number... I've changed plugs out of a 2.4 cavalier at 86,000 and my 96 sonoma at 92,000miles respectively. Oh, and yes, with copper core on both. My Sonoma needed a second set of plugs after 24,000 miles, so if it holds true, I'm probably breaking even over getting platniums I guess.
