19Cutlass94 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Well nows the time to learn! Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 lol yes very true but i cant have the car out for to long thats the thing and i dunno if i even have the rigth tools Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 You dont need very many tools to atleast take the valve cover off and take a look. Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 is it just those four bolts on top? Quote
ns87 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Oh my god. I cringed when I heard that video. Is there any way you could not drive it all the time? That motor needs some help Quote
GP1138 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 REVVING IT AND DRIVING IT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS...... ERRRRRRRR..... I suggest removing the valve cover and looking... not that hard. Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 well im gonna take the cover off tomorrow morning and see if i cant figure it out if not its going into my mechanic tomorrow Quote
GOT2B GM Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Best case scenario its a bad lifter......... Quote
Euro Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Damn that sounds like hell. I'll second the lifter problem. Quote
spiderw31 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 WOW that sounds nasty I'll third the lifter scenario... hopefully it isn't worse than that. Absolutely definately positively pull the cam (valve) cover and look at it. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 You'll need to pull the cam carrier to really tell. Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 it its a bad lifter how much labor would it to get that fixed and aprox how much for a new lifter? Quote
spiderw31 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 IIRC, lifters are about $25 each (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Labor, I dunno exactly, but the cam would have to come off to do the job, and the cams would need to be retimed after that. Based on that, I would say not terribly cheap. If you were to do it yourself though, all it would cost is time. Quote
Euro Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Yeah lifters aren't that expensive.....labor is Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 pulled the cover couldent see anything wrong so im asuming its a lifter Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 You will end up dropping around $600-$900 to fix this problem while your in there get the timing belt replaced and do the oil pump drive seal. Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 just got back from the shop and they said its a broken rod and that i need a new engine Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 Broken Rod??? uhhh I doubt that happened mabye a spun rod bearing. Quote
synistershadows Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 i dunno but best way to describe the soudn is idling sounds like a john deer tractor driving sounds like a metal fork caught in a blender Quote
spiderw31 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I dunno man... somehow I don't think that is a broken rod, although not actually hearing it in person doesn't help any. You describe the sound as coming from the top of the engine, right? If so I really doubt that it is a broken rod, as that sound would be coming from the bottom end of the motor. Also, after listening to your video clip at the point where you were behind the car, it didn't really sound as though it was misfiring, and I can't imagine how it wouldn't misfire if it had a broken rod. I still think it is something valvetrain related. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 I still think it is something valvetrain related. I think if it was a broken rod, it would be much louder... I agree with the above. Lifter or something.... Quote
IRONDOG442 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 If the rod was broken the car wouldnt start at all or not start easily. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 If the rod was broken the car wouldnt start at all or not start easily. That's kind of what I was thinking, but I sometimes underestimate my engine knoweledge. Quote
spiderw31 Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 If the rod was broken the car wouldnt start at all or not start easily. This is also true. Quote
