john99gtp
Howdy howdy, I am a total newb when it comes with car audio systems, but I want to do something about my audio system. ATM, i have stock deck and everything, the only thing i changed were the rear speakers, which are infinity 6x9. These speakers are rated for 100W RMS (300 peak), and i think my factory deck puts out less then half that. What I would like to do, and if its not possible, let me know. I would like to use the existing speaker wire that is there, feed it into an amp, then come out of the amp, into the speakers, giving them more power. I have no idea what i need to do this, but i believe i need a 2 channel amp, but thats about all i know I do not want to have to run anything special, although im sure i will need to run some sort of power wire, but other then that, i would like to use the existing wires and such. If this is doable, do you have any recommendations for any amps or such? Ive been looking online, but its hard since i dont know what i am doing. :willynilly: any help is appreciated, thanks. john
19Cutlass94
Well, youll want a 2 channel amp for the 6x9's. The tricky part is, youll need to find the positive and negative wires on thw harness in the back of the deck, and splice in new wires and run them to the amp, youll also need a remote wire, positive wire ( probably 8g for your needs would more then do it ) and a ground wire. Im not exactly sure if you can splice those wires with the stock deck or not. I honestly dont know much about the stock decks, but depending on where you put your amp for them ( like in the trunk ) youll have to run + and - fom the deck to the amp. So thats 4 wires plus the remote wire plus the battery ( positive wire ) so thats 6 wires.... wait youll need RCA's too so thats actually 7 wires from the deck to the trunk. I know taking mine out wasnt fun at all. But maybe more guys/gals will chime in about the stock deck because I dont believe youll be able to do that. You might have to get an aftermarket one. Then splice the wires from the connector harness ( from the stock to the aftermarket ) and your stock deck prolly only puts out 10-15w RMS to your speakers. Id suggest getting an aftermarket deck, ( worry about the amp in a little bit ) and just trying to get some wiring done. It alot of work to amp the speakers. You better off going with like an 8" or 10" sub if what your looking for is bass IMHO
john99gtp
ahh but see im not looking for all bass im looking for some good punch, with some clear highs. i listen to alot of techno (especially as of late) and ive been blasting it, but above a certain point, it just gets distorted cause of saturation. ive read some posts where i thought it said you could do that, just speaker in, speaker out kind of deal, but, i coulda been wrong, like i said, total newb when it comes to car audio. 19Cutlass94
Naa, I dont believe you can do a speaker in, speaker out. Youll have to splice the wires and run em to your amp. But those Infinity's ( as your prolly know ) will give you great/clear highs. An 8" sub prolly has just the right amount of bas your looking for. I mean itll give you more than your 6x9's but it will not by any means be over whelming.
THe_DeTAiL3R
My single 12" sealed sub sounds great with my Infinity 6x9s. But yeah, a 8 or 10" would be good too.
LukeZ34
What system do you have in the GTP John? 6 Speaker basic, 8 Speaker Premium, or 8 Speaker Bose?
ToroToro
Not too sure what you are trying to do...19cutlass94's post consfused the shit out of me, but this sounds like a very simple thing to do. Buy a two channel amp, cut the rear speaker wires IN THE TRUNK for a signal. Either run them to a speaker to RCA converter, or just buy an amp with speaker level inputs, which would be much better. Then just run them wires back to the speakers from the amp. Run a power wire for the amp from the battery. Find a good ground in the trunk for the amp. Run the remote positive either from the radio's ACCESSORY power wire, or any other wire that is hot in run. ( cluster, climate controls, whatever ) I reccomend the latter, because if you tap the radio accessory wire, or the PWR antennae signal, the amp will be on when you turn the key to accessory. And having the amp on without the engine running is a good way to smoke a battery quick. Anyways, that's really just about it.
john99gtp
What system do you have in the GTP John? 6 Speaker basic, 8 Speaker Premium, or 8 Speaker Bose? I have 6 speakers i believe, 2 on each front door, 2 in the rear. i am not positive, but i will check. So Toro, I can run it the way i wanted to? speaker in/speaker out? and just run a line from the harness under my glovebox? cause IIRC, that has 12v all, 12v switched, 12v run. ill have to look into this a bit more, i know of people that have had the 6x9s as well, and they hit hard enough for me if done correctly. hell, in my lumina they hit well enough, i had a fosgate deck with 55w x4, sounded awesome! should never have gotten rid of that deck
jdcutty
You just need an amp with high level inputs. Connect them to the rear speaker leads. Run an 8 guage wire with in line fuse from battery to amp, use a 18 guage wire to run from a non-constant source for the remote lead, and 8 guage ground lead (try to keep the ground wire shorter than three feet for minimal power loss). That should be about it, now you just need to find the amp.
19Cutlass94
Having an am turn on with the ignition ( especially his since I wont like like a 4 million watt amp ) wont kill the battery very quickly. I can have mine on for a couple hours and it still starts.
ToroToro
Mine was dead within a half hour running an ancient Orion ( back when they were good ) 50W RMS amp I suppose that battery could have been junk though. I dont even remember anymore.
Garrett Powered
take it to a shop if its the TGP, experiment on the GTP.

1990lumina
http://www.w-body.com/forum/index.php/topic,30681.0.html you could probably mount it something like that if you wanted....I never had any problems with heat build up or anything. If that Kenwood your looking at has speaker level inputs I'd say go ahead and buy it....should give you what you are looking for
john99gtp
got the amp from my manager it is a kenwood KAC848, 4 channel amp, 50x4 or 2x150 in bridged mode. now to actually buy an amp kit to install it.
19Cutlass94
Is that 2x150 2ohm or 4ohm?
john99gtp
it says 4ohm, which is weird, i thought it woulda been 100W since its 50W a channel bridged. but im looking at the spec sheet, and it says "2 channel mode 150Wx2 for 4 ohms" i bought some amp kits, now to actually find some time to install it. lol. this outta be fun and luke, i was wrong, i have 8 speakers, 2 on each front door, a tweeter on each rear door, and the 6x9's on the rear deck.[br]Posted on: March 30, 2006, 10:11:42 PM_________________________________________________so....one thing i couldnt find was the battery terminal clamp thing, but then i remembered that some people, i think, put the power right on the fuse box post thing. if you have any info on whether thats safe, lemme kno. ....i believe thats where ive seen people put the power cable. 19Cutlass94
Its OK to use the AUX power ( if thats what you mean ) for the power wire, although the battery terminal is preferred

Jud alright , you hook me up with what I need to go fast and I will do you up a system for your car. We will just trade cars for a while and then both will have what we want. ..deal? Thats with 1500 watt at 2 ohms running to your sub, a cs-130-d alt of course with 2 gauge running all the way back. you will never burn a coil again this amp comes with a 3 farad capacitor with digital display. I got starters for cheap too.
